RHS Girls Soccer Wins Two More To Remain Unbeaten

The Revere High girls soccer team remained un-un-un — unbeaten, untied, and unscored upon — with two more shutout victories over Greater Boston League (GBL) opponents this past week.

Last Tuesday the Lady Patriots corralled the Medford Lady Mustangs, 4-0. Erika Mejia led the Revere offense with two goals on free kicks that were earned by the hard work of teammates Kaylin Foglar and Nataly Oliva.

Sandra Torres started the scoring by receiving a throw-in from her sister Emily,  which led to Sandra dribbling around the Medford defenders and delivering a strike into the top corner of the Lady Mustang net. The last goal was scored by Nataly Oliva with an assist from Kelsey Morales and Samarah Paiva.

“Fatima Oliva and Catalina Chizavo both played great defensively and moved the ball upfield to their  teammates,” said RHS head coach Megan O’Donnell. “Giselle Salvador and Ari Pina and Samarah Paiva locked down the defense for us. Emily Torres, Jessica Galvez, and Salma Zamoria all chipped away with big plays at different times to help the team win.”

Lady Patriot goal-keeper Nisrin Sekkat recorded another shutout and made some impressive saves on the Medford forwards.

“Medford is a well-coached and aggressive team, so this win was a big one,” noted O’Donnell.

Two days later Revere edged the Lady Golden Tornadoes of Malden, 1-0.

“Coach Rick and his Malden team played us very tough and tested our defense and gave our midfield a hard time to be the first team to get multiple shots on net that tested our integrity,” said O’Donmell. “Our team didn’t play their best due to injuries and a team bug that’s going around.

“We had a few opportunities in the first half to score, but we couldn’t finish,” O’Donnell continued.

The Lady Patriots finally broke through with about eight minutes left in the game. Erika Mejia and Samarah Paiva moved the ball up the middle and then down the sideline to Catalina Chizavo, who then sent a nice through-ball to Nataly Oliva. Nataly took the ball to the corner of the box and delivered a strike to the bottom right of the goalie for the game-winner.

“Kelsey Morales, Fatima Oliva, Giselle Salvador, and Emily Torres held Malden to four shots on net and Nisrin Sekkat made some great saves and is finding her niche in goal,” O’Donnell added. “The midfield who was controlled by Sandra Torres, Samarah Paiva, Erika Mejia, and Catalina Chizavo, who played hard and took many hard hits from Malden, but were able to move the ball up the field to give Nataly, Kesley, Angie, and Salma the chance to score multiple times during the game.”

The junior varsity squad  earned a 3-3 tie with their Malden counterparts with Ikram Bichia scoring two goals and freshman Sarah Granados scored her first career goal. Teammates Ajsi Balla and Andrea Mendieta turned in their best games of the season.

O’Donnell and her crew, who stand at 6-0 in the GBL and are 8-0 overall, are scheduled to face their biggest challenges of the season this week. They were set to take on Somerville, which is 7-0 in the GBL, yesterday (Tuesday) and Lynn Classical, which is 4-1-1 in the GBL, tomorrow (Thursday).  They will trek to GBL rival Lynn English next Tuesday.

RHS/MHS Golfers Top Salem, 48-24

The Revere/Malden High golf team hosted Salem in its first non-league match of the season at Kelley Greens in Nahant last week amidst strong winds, temperatures in the mid-50s on the water, and a stinging rain, but despite the conditions, coach Brandon Pezzuto’s crew hit some very impressive shots to put together a winning effort, 48-24.

The team’s record now stands at an impressive 4-1 on the season.

The highlight shot of the match was a 220+ yard recovery shot by Frankie Annunziata on the fifth hole. “The coaching staff was impressed by the mental maturity displayed by Frankie to bounce back after a poor tee shot and recover with the ‘swing of the season’ thus far,” said Pezzuto.

Match winners included Matt Lacroix (#2) 6.5-2.5, Annunziata (#3) 6-3, Jacob Simonelli (#4) 8-1, Tommy Cronin (#5) 6.5-2.5, captain Ollie Svendsen (#6 6.5-2.5), and captain Ryan Coggswell (#7) 8.5-.5.

Pezzuto and his crew engaged in a well-needed short game session at Mount Hood last week in preparation for a match with Somerville last Thursday at Stoneham Oaks. “The match will be pivotal for us to compete for the GBL Championship, as well as for our first tournament bid in over five years,” said Pezzuto.

Girls Cross Country Runs Past English

The Revere High girls cross country team earned its second victory of the season with a 19-40 triumph over Lynn English last Wednesday. Lady Patriot Rocio Gonzalez Castillo once again dominated the race from start to finish, while also running her personal best race time on Revere’s home course.

Olivia Rupp made a strong surge late in the race to take second place in a closely-battled matchup. “Olivia was neck and neck with Lynn English’s top runner throughout most of the course, but in the last half mile, Olivia amped up her pace and broke away,” said RHS head coach Katie Sinnott.  “It was a great run for her.”

Another standout performance was turned in by Daniela Santana Baez, who topped her previous home best by well over two minutes and improved her personal best pace by over 30 seconds per mile. Other runners earning personal-best paces were Hiba El Bzyouy, Afnane Amine, and Rania Abdelhannane.

Sinnott and her crew are scheduled to host Everett today (Wednesday) and Malden next Wednesday.

Strong Performance by RHS Field Hockey Team

Although the Revere High field hockey team came out on the short end of a 3-2 decision to Ursuline Academy this past Saturday, first year Lady Patriot head coach Alex Saturday was pleased with aspects of her team’s performance.

“We had a strong first quarter of the game, with goals being scored by Bella Stamatopoulos and Isabella Mendieta (assisted by Danni Randall),” said Butler.

Butler and her crew are scheduled to play at Everett today (Wednesday) and will host Northeast Regional this Saturday evening at Harry Della Russo Stadium at 5:00 and Malden Catholic on the holiday at 10:00. They will trek to Methuen next Tuesday.

RHS Boys Cross Country Improving

Although the Revere High boys cross country team came up on the short end of a 22-35 decision to ynn English last week, coach Mike Flynn’s squad turned in some fine performances.

Youness Chahid led the Patriots across the finish line with a second-place effort in a time of 16:34. Teammate Adam Assour finished sixth with a time of 19:17, followed by Zaraius Bilimoria in seventh with a time of 19:19, Ziyed Dendane (who “ran a very strong first home race” noted Flynn) in eighth (20:42), Vincent Phan in 12th (23:13), and Abdo Rochdi in 13th (26:03).

The Patriots host Everett today (Wednesday) and Malden next Wednesday.

Boys Soccer Hosts Classical, English

The Revere High boys soccer team, which earned a 2-0 victory over Malden last Thursday, will seek to stay on the winning track with home contests with Greater Boston League (GBL) foes Lynn Classical tomorrow (Thursday) and Lynn English next Tuesday.

After sprinting to a 4-0 start, the Patriots recently fell to GBL rivals Chelsea and Medford before topping Malden last Thursday, 2-0.

Revere, which is now 5-2 on the season, was scheduled to take on GBL opponent Somerville yesterday (Tuesday) prior to heading into its matches with Classical and English.
