Superb Performances for RHS Boys Track at MSTCA Winter Festival

The Revere High boys indoor track and field team turned in a number of tremendous performances at Sunday’s MSTCA Winter Festival Meet at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Senior JV Cunha placed second overall in the 600 meter dash, the highest placement of the day for the Patriots, with a clocking of 1:27.27. Teammate Kenan Batic ran a strong second in his heat, which was Kenan’s first time running the 600 in an invitational as he moves to shorter distances.

A trio of Patriots achieved personal records (PRs) in the 1000 meter event, led by Youness Chahid, who placed fourth overall (and first in his heat) with a new PR of 2:50.09. “This was a breakout performance for Youness,” said RHS head coach David Fleming.

Edwin Alarcon, running in the 1000 for the first time, took first place in his heat; beating a runner from Somerville. “Edwin moved into the lead with about a lap to go,” said Fleming. “He looked smooth and comfortable and is ready to run faster.”

Teammate Mo Fares also ran a strong race, turning in a PR by seven seconds.

The Revere shot-put contingent also earned three PRs, recording two throws over 40 feet, paced by Allen Hou, who set a PR with a toss of 41′-5″. Kevin Purcifull established a PR with a throw of 40′-5″ and Nico Aguirre, fresh from the football season, also PR’d with his throw of 38′-9.5″.

In the 55 meter dash, Hou broke the seven-second mark with a sprint of 6.99, a strong early-season time, and just missed the finals by .02 (6.97 was the cut-off).

In the 55 meter hurdles event, the Patriots were missing their ace hurdler, Isaiah DeCrosta, who is injured, but Farj Riazi made the finals with a PR clocking of 9.88. In the high jump, Richard Vilme took sixth place with a strong early-season jump of 5′-8″.

A quartet of underclassmen shone in the 4 x 200 relay. Youcef Benhamou, Oliver Escobar, Geo Woodard, and Jeremy X, three sophomores and a junior (Benhamou and Woodard played football), won their heat and placed sixth overall with an outstanding time of 1:38.86, which was less than a half-second behind last indoor season’s best time (1:38.47).

Fleming and his Patriot squad will open their 2024 dual-meet indoor season this Friday when they trek back to the Reggie Lewis Center to take on Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Somerville. All of the GBL’s dual meets will be held at the Reggie this season. Revere will meet their other six GBL opponents (Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Lynn English, and Lynn Classical) in three tri-meets in January.

Strong Showing for RHS Girls Track at MSTCA Winter Festival

A contingent of the Revere High girls indoor track and field team turned in some outstanding performances at this past weekend’s MSTCA Winter Festival to kick off the indoor season.

“We’re excited to be back out on the track,” said RHS head coach Racquel MacDonald. “We had 11 girls from the track team compete and overall we saw some great times, jumps, and throws for the first invitational.

“It really shows how hard the girls were working in the off-season to come back just as strong as they ended last year,” MacDonald added.

Junior Liv Yuong had an outstanding meet and placed highest among all of the Lady Patriot athletes. Liv took home fifth place overall in the 55m hurdles with a time of 10.07 and placed second overall in the high jump with a leap of 5′- 5″, which already qualifies her for the D1 State Meet in February.

Senior captain Giselle Salvador opened up her season in the 55m dash with a personal record (PR)-tying time of 8.29. Sophomore Olivia Rupp ran the mile in 6:09.19, which is only seven seconds off Olivia’s PR from last year. Danni Hope Randall also landed close to her last year’s PR in the 300m with a time of 48.31. Gemma Stamatopolous, a newcomer to the Lady Patriot indoor track team, had a great first meet with a clocking of 1:53 in the 600m and a leap of 4′-6″ in the high jump.

“We’re looking forward to opening up our GBL season on Friday versus Somerville,” said MacDonald, whose full squad will return to the Reggie Lewis Center this Friday to open their 2024 dual-meet indoor season against Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Somerville. All of the GBL dual meets will be held at the Reggie this season. Revere will meet their other six GBL opponents (Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Lynn English, and Lynn Classical) in three tri-meets in January..

RHS Girls Basketball Hosts English Tomorrow

The Revere High girls basketball team will host Greater Boston League rival Lynn English tomorrow (Thursday) at the Merullo Fieldhouse at Revere High.

New RHS head coach Ariana Rivera’s squad dropped their season-opener last Thursday at Northeastern Conference foe Marblehead, 33-24. Haley Belloise topped the Lady Patriots’s scoring column with eight points, while Alisha Jean pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

“We competed hard with Marblehead,” said Rivera. “It was clearly a defensive game on both ends. We struggled to take care of the basketball, committing 18 turnovers as a team. We are looking forward to starting GBL play this week.”

Rivera and her crew hosted GBL opponent Lynn Classical last night (Tuesday). After tomorrow night’s encounter with Lynn English, they will trek to Medford next Tuesday and to Chelsea next Thursday.
