Guest Op-Ed: Supporting Our Seniors

By Steve Morabito

As Mayor, I will be a strong advocate for Revere’s seniors.  We need to do more to give our older residents access to great programming, services, and the property tax relief they deserve.  I will always be accessible and work closely with seniors to ensure that they have a voice at City Hall.

This is work that I’ve already started, sponsoring legislation to create an Aid to Elderly & Disabled Tax in Revere, and sponsoring a motion, which now allows Veterans an option for a $750 property tax abatement or a $500 water bill abatement in Revere. We must do more.

As Mayor, I will fast-track the creation of more senior-specific housing units and support the expansion of the Revere’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund. I will continue to push property tax relief for seniors and expand Revere’s rental assistance efforts to create a more affordable city.

Additionally, I will work with community stakeholders to foster the creation of part-time engagement and employment opportunities for seniors in community-based organizations and businesses, and partnering with local colleges and universities to provide lifelong learning opportunities.

I will increase cultural programming for our seniors through partnerships with local businesses and non-profits to sponsor senior concerts, luncheons, and events. I will also pilot neighborhood legacy programs that capture the wealth of history and stories from Revere’s elders.

And I will use the bully pulpit of the office to ensure that programs like “The Ride” are fully funded and available.

Revere’s older residents are the backbone of our community — it is our responsibility to treat them as such.

Steven Morabito is a Councillor-at-Large for the City of Revere, as well as a candidate for Mayor in the upcoming election.
