Sister Jean Marie Cotter, PBVM

February 17, 1934 – July 3, 2023

Sister Jean Marie Cotter, PBVM, of St. Colman’s Home, Watervliet, NY, died peacefully with the Lord on Monday, July 3. 

She was born in Chelsea on February 17, 1934, the daughter of the late Michael A. and Helen J. Tylward Cotter and was a graduate of Immaculate Conception Grammar School and High School in Revere.  She worked as a telephone operator briefly before entering the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary on July 5, 1955 and took her final profession on February 11, 1961.

Sr. Jean Marie received her bachelor’s degree from the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY and had a special certification in Special Education.  She taught at many schools in the Albany, NY diocese and worked with special needs children at Cobb Memorial School in Altamont, NY and also spent summers in Juneau, Alaska as the day care director.  Most recently, she was the administrative assistant to Rev. Mother Louise at St. Colman’s.

Sister had a tremendous wit and sense of humor and was very kind and generous to the employees at St. Colman’s.  She was known to decorate the coffee pot area for the time of the season and loved to shop for her decorations.  She was a diehard Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan.

She was predeceased by her three brothers, Michael “Gus” Cotter, Rev. John Cotter (her twin) and Daniel Cotter and her sister, Katie Crane.  She is survived by several loving nieces and nephews.

Relatives, friends and the religious community may call at St. Colman’s Home Chapel, 11 Haswell Road, Watervliet, NY on Friday, July 14​, from 4 to 6 p.m.  Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 15 at 10 a.m. at St. Colman’s Chapel followed by the burial in St. Colman’s Cemetery.

Marie D. Cowhig

Owned Revere’s Dorothy Deering Dance Studio for Many Years 

Marie D. Cowhig was born, raised and lived her entire life in Revere in the home in which she was born 102 years ago.

The daughter of William and Elizabeth (Doyle) Cowhig, she was predeceased by her brother, William Cowhig and his wife, Florence, Vincent Cowhig, Sr., and his wife, Irene and her sister, Katherine Cowhig.

Using the stage name Dorothy Deering, she danced professionally in night clubs and theaters throughout the United States and Canada. During World War II, she joined the U.S.D. and entertained our troops in Europe. She owned and operated the Dorothy Deering Dance Studio in Revere for many years.

She is survived by her nephew, Vincent Cowhig, Jr. and his wife, Elisa, her grandniece, Elizabeth Cowhig, and her husband, Paul Rowe, her grandnephew, Sean Cowhig and great grandnephew, Elios Cowhig Rowe, as well as her dear friends, Carol Tye and Donna Dreezen.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Immaculate Conception Church, 133 Beach St., Revere today, Wednesday, July 12 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mystic Valley Elder Services, 800 Commercial Street #19, Malden MA, 02148.

James Gerard “Jimmy” Olsen, Sr.

Devoted Son, Brother, Husband, Father and Papa

James Gerard “Jimmy” Olsen, Sr., 69, of Newburyport and formerly of Oak Island, Revere, passed away on Friday, July 7 after a valiant battle with a brief, but unrelenting, illness.

Born in 1954 to the late Revere Fire Department Capt. Henry L. Olsen and his wife, Dorothy M. Olsen, Jimmy was also the devoted husband of Joyce (Orlandella) Olsen of Newburyport; the loving father of James G. Olsen Jr. and his wife, Colleen and “Papa” to his two adored grandchildren, Jason and Addison Olsen, all of Amesbury. Jimmy was the loving brother to Karen (Olsen) DeVincentis and her husband, Carl of Maine and Florida, Susan M. Olsen and Dr. Nancy R. Olsen-Waldron, PhD, both of Revere. He also leaves several loving nieces and nephews.

Jimmy grew up in and spent his life in the Shirley Avenue and Oak Island neighborhoods of Revere before moving to Newburyport with his young family in the 1990’s. He was a 1972 graduate of the Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational High School where he learned the skills and trade of plumbing. After a lengthy career as a Union Master Plumber, he became a Senior Estimator for the firm of CDM Smith of Boston where he worked until the time of his passing.

Jimmy had a kind and gentle nature and was fond of telling stories to his family and friends. A lifelong animal lover, Jimmy particularly loved his dogs including his Weimaraner ‘Yawkey’ who predeceased him. Jimmy was a devoted son, brother, husband, father and Papa. He will be forever loved, missed and cherished by all who knew him.

Carol Zanstuck

Elementary School Teacher in Chelsea for 36 Years

Family and friends attended a Visitation on Monday, July 10 in the Vertuccio Smith & Vazza, Beechwood Home for Funerals, 262 Beach St, Revere for Carol A. Zanstuck, 80, of Revere, formerly of Charlestown, who was called home to God on July 2 after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. A Funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 250 Revere St., Revere followed by interment in St. Michael Cemetery, Boston.

Born on November 10, 1942, she was the beloved daughter of the late Anna and John Zanstuck; sister of Marie Zanstuck of Revere and John Zanstuck and his wife, Deborah of South Weymouth. She is also survived by her nephews, John Zanstuck, Jr. of South Weymouth and Matthew and Scott Zanstuck of Pembroke, several cousins, an aunt and her long-time friend, Herb Price.

Carol earned a master’s degree in Elementary Education from Salem State College and pursued a career in teaching for 36 years in the Chelsea school system. She also worked part time at Boston Neighborhood Network TV directing and filming events in Boston.

A heartfelt thanks to the staff at Life Care Center of Stoneham for their excellent and sincere compassion during her year long stay.

Eleanor McCarrick

Devoted Wife, Loving Mother, Revered Grandmother and Great-Grandmother

Eleanor F. (Gaffny) McCarrick, 84, in Wayland, formerly of Revere and Stoneham, died on July 2, following a brief illness.

The beloved wife of 59 years to the late Robert A. McCarrick, she was the loving mother of Nancy A. Hurley and her husband, Brian of Wayland, John F. McCarrick and his wife, Nancy of Boston, Susan D. McCarrick-Sansone of Watertown and the late Andrew R. McCarrick.

A devoted wife, loving mother and revered grandmother and great-grandmother, Eleanor was a devout woman of faith and a lifelong educator. Eleanor was particularly known for her gentle, humble and selfless nature in addition to her quiet strength and genuine compassion. Eleanor gave to all those around her including her dear friends, beloved family, community, in particular Revere and the Immaculate Conception parish, and canine companions.

She was the cherished grandmother of Meghan A. Meikleham and her husband, Matt of Hingham, Katherine R. Mehlhorn and her husband, Keegan of Charlestown, Ellen M. Hurley of Hopkinton, Lt. Daniel C. Hurley, USN, and his wife, LT. Alexis Hurley, USN of Virginia Beach, VA, Caroline E. Hurley of Charlestown, Kathleen M. Hurley of Boston’s North End, Rachel M. Sansone of Denver, CO and Hannah E. Sansone of Watertown and adored great-grandmother of Nelle, Hayes and Van; dear sister of the late Robert F. Gaffny; loving sister-in-law of the late Denise Robitel and treasured aunt of Michael, Cheryl, Kevin, Jill and Roy. Eleanor will be particularly missed for her wry grins, wise words and unconditional love.

Family and friends attended Visiting Hours in the Vertuccio, Smith & Vazza, Beechwood Home for Funerals, 262 Beach St. Revere on July 6 and a funeral was conducted from the funeral home on Friday, July 7 followed by a Funeral Mass in Immaculate Conception Church, 133 Beach St., Revere. Interment followed in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.

Jean Doherty

Retired Flight Service Technician

Jean F. (Gilmore) Doherty of Revere passed away on July 6. She was 92 years old.

The beloved wife of the late Michael J. Doherty, Jean was born in Malden, the cherished daughter of the late Hugh E. and Irene (O’Sullivan) Gilmore.

Prior to her retirement, Jean worked as a flight service technician for Sky Chef. She loved to play Bocce and go bowling, but she was best known as a world traveler and a beach lover.

Jean was the devoted mother of Michael Hugh Doherty and his wife, Anita of Wakefield, Kerry Starr and her husband, Robert of Gibsonia, PA, Kathleen Melanson and her husband, Michael, Sean Doherty, Maureen Dazkevich and her husband, George, all of Winthrop, the late Michael Gerard Doherty and “mother of the heart” to Marilyn Gifford of Florida. She was the adored grandmother of Kaitlin, Michael, Gianna, Ashley, Sara, Jessica and Alison and loving great-grandmother of Brooke and Jake; the dear sister of the late Louise Russell Campbell and Hugh Gilmore Jr.

A visiting hour will take place in St. John the Evangelist Church (St. Michael’s Parish) 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop, today, Wednesday, July 12 from 9 to 10 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass beginning at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Barbara Roche

June 8, 1961 – July 4, 2023

Barbara  Ann  Roche  of  Salem died on July  4  at  the  age  of  62.   

Born  on  June  8,  1961,  to  the  late Joseph  and  Mary  (Foley)  Roche, she was the cherished mother of Julia Roche and devoted sister of Marie Roche, both of  Salem. 

Barbara  graduated  from  Revere  High  School  in   1979   and   went   on   to   receive  a  B.A  in  Psychology  from Boston  College  in  1983  and  a  Masters  (1986)  and  Ph.D.  (1988)  in  Child  Psychology  from  Ohio University.   Her   life   and   career  was built around helping children and Barbara served as a child psychologist  in  the  Beverly,  Salem  and   Newbury   School   Systems.      

Barbara is celebrated by her family members,   cousins, friends  and  colleagues. 

A  visitation  will  be  held  at  the  Buonfiglio  &  Sons  Funeral   Home,   128   Revere   St,    Revere  on  Monday  July  17 from  at 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at the Immaculate Conception Church  in  Revere  at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are  kindly invited.  Private Interment.

Jenna Carruthers

Of New Hampshire, formerly of Revere

Jenna M. Carruthers, 40, died on July 7 at her home in Kingston, N.H after a long illness.

She was born on January 25 1983 in Boston and grew up in Revere. In 1997, her family moved to Kingston, N.H. She graduated from Sanborn Regional High School in 2001 and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from the University of New Hampshire in 2006.

She was employed as a portfolio management analyst for SIAA insurance broker in Hampton, NH and formerly as an administrative assistant for DMG Mori. She also worked at Market Basket in Stratham, N.H for many years.

Jenna led a very active lifestyle. She loved nature and enjoyed hiking and yoga. She liked taking trips to California and was a dog lover and a member of the Golden Dog Adventure Company.

She is survived by her daughter, Eclipse Rosalie Bryant and her mother, Debra Ann Carruthers, both of Kingston, NH.

At her request, there will be no formal services.
