RHS football team
opens season Friday
The Revere High football team will make the short trek westward down the Revere Beach Parkway Friday evening when coach Lou Cicatelli and his Patriot gridmen open their 2016 season against Medford under the lights on the Mustangs’ home field of Hormel Stadium. The opening kickoff is set for 7:00PM.
“Things have been going well in the pre-season and we’re looking forward to the start of the season,†said Cicatelli, who guided the Patriots to an 8-3 record in 2015, one of the best-ever in the annals of RHS football.
“We have a lot of young players this year, so there has been a steep learning curve,†said the veteran head coach, who lost 15 players to graduation. “Our offensive line has one holdover in our center, senior tri-captain Anthony DeStefano, and the rest are first-year players, including a freshman, Julio Paris.†Sophomores Frank Simms and Devin Matthias will be joined by senior Gabe Martinez on the O-line.
Another key position to be filled is that of quarterback with the departure of three-year starter Dan Murphy, who was the Offensive Player of the Year in the Northeastern Conference in 2015 and who now is playing at Saint Anselm’s.
However, senior Eddie Sullivan has stepped up to fill the role and has looked impressive in the pre-season outings.
Sullivan has two key players from 2015 among his offensive weaponry in tailback and tri-captain Victor Rivera and primary receiver Oscar Lopez, who will fill a variety of positions, including running back, tight end, and slot receiver.
The Patriot defense, which was among the stingiest on the North Shore last year, will be spearheaded by a group of veterans in tri-captain John DeSimone, DeStefano, Rivera, and Lopez. Senior Gianni Hall, first-year players Eddie Ballou, a junior, and Jeremiah Miniweather, a senior, and Martinez also will be expected to contribute on the defensive side of the ball.
The Patriots will be competing in a division of the Northeastern Conference that includes Winthrop, Salem, Lynn Classical, Saugus, and Swampscott.
This past Saturday the Patriots engaged in a game-condition scrimmage at Marblehead, one of the top-rated teams on the other side of the Northeastern Conference, and played well in a 28-21 outcome in Marblehead’s favor.
“We showed a lot of encouraging signs against a Marblehead team that is a favorite to win its division,†said Cicatelli. “We were with them all the way.â€
Cicatelli and his crew will host Masconomet Regional next Friday evening (September 16) under the lights at Harry Della Russo Stadium.
Fall seasons
are underway
The fall sports season will be in full swing this coming week for the various Revere High boys and girls athletic squads.
The boys soccer team travels to Danvers next Wednesday (September 14) and the girls soccer squad hosts Danvers that same day.
The field hockey team plays today (Wednesday) at Beverly, hosts Danvers Friday, and treks to Marblehead Tuesday.
The golfers play at Danvers Monday and host Danvers the following day.
The boys and girls cross-country teams open their seasons at Saugus Tuesday.
The RHS volleyball team, which opened its season yesterday (Tuesday), hosts Beverly Friday, and plays at Lynn Classical Tuesday.

RHS head football coach Lou Cicatelli and captains Jay Quarantello and Steve Ennamorati were guests this week on Casoli’s Corner, which is hosted by former RHS player and Revere police detective Mickey “Just Say No to Drugs†Casoli. Cicatelli and his squad will open the 2006 season Friday evening at Newell Stadium in Gloucester.

The third annual Great Northern Manufacturing 10K Road Race drew a record field of 118 runners Saturday. Randy Thomas of Amherst won the race in a new record time of 29:28. Charley Haversat from Brighton was the top female runner in 35:34, also a course record for women.
The Revere High football team battled Lynn Tech to a 0-0 draw in the annual North Shore football jamboree held under the lights Friday evening at the Manning Bowl in Lynn.

September 1, 1976
The Revere Track League, which held weekly cross county races of 2.4 miles for adults and 1.2 miles for school-age youth this past summer, completed a successful third season. Former RHS track star Dom Finelli won the 2.4 mile season finale in 13:54.
LaQuaglia will participate in Jimmy Fund Walk
Ronald LaQuaglia of Revere will be participating in his 27th consecutive Jimmy Fund Walk in memory of his daughter, Stacey.
The Walk will be held on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016. LaQuaglia will walk 13.1 miles from Wellesley to downtown Boston.
Donations can be made in Stacey’s memory by sending a check to Ronald LaQuaglia, 83 Sewall St., Revere, MA 02151, or by going to The Jimmy Fund Walk Web site and typing in the name, Ronald LaQuaglia.
Donations will be accepted through Oct. 31.
