Revere High baseball coach Joe Ranno told the Revere Journal Tuesday about some interesting wardrobe and equipment rules for baseball coaches in the upcoming season.
Beginning this year in the Northeastern Conference, all adult coaches, who are in the first or third base coaching boxes, must wear a full baseball uniform. That means assistant coach Richard Robichaud, who coaches third base for the Patriots (Ranno does his coaching from bench area when Revere is at-bat), will be required to wear a Revere High baseball uniform for all games.
In a safety related change, all baseball coaches must wear batting helmets during games. Baseball players who are called upon to coach the bases must also wear batting helmets inside the coach’s box. Of course, the hitters are required to wear batting helmets.
Many attribute the increased velocity of baseballs struck by aluminum bats as the reason for helmet requirement for coaches. There has been an upsurge in incidents of base coaches being struck by line drives.
