The city council held a moment of silence in honor of longtime former Revere teacher and current school committee member Tony Mattera at the beginning of Monday night’s meeting.

Mattera died on Saturday at the age of 68 following a battle with cancer.

“This past Saturday, the city lost a Revere icon in Tony Mattera,” said Ward 1 Councillor Joanne McKenna. “Tony and his family loved Revere and have deep roots in the city. Tony’s father was the assistant superintendent of the Revere public schools, his brother Mark taught for 38 years. Tony’s nephew, Michael, and brother, Christopher, as well as, Mark’s son, Maxwell, are currently teachers in the system still.”

Mattera was the husband of Denise, father to Alexis, Maxwell, and Jenna, and grandfather of Caleb and Ethan.

“A teacher in Revere for 32 years, a coach, and just recently elected to the school committee, his beautiful legacy will live on,” said McKenna. “For over 36 years, Tony was a talented carpenter, and he probably did work for you at some point. Tony was a very dear friend and a good friend to many, and we will miss him deeply.”

Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects to Mattera at Buonfiglio Funeral Home on Thursday, June 27, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
