New Season, New Coaches for RHS Girls Lacrosse, Softball

The spring sports season is ready to swing into high gear for Revere High athletes, who have been practicing since the formal opening day of the pre-season last Monday.

The Revere High girls lacrosse team will inaugurate the 2022 spring season when they make the long trek to Gloucester tomorrow (Thursday).

The Lady Patriots have been working diligently in preparation for the upcoming season-opener under new head coach Amy Rotger.

Rotger, who was an outstanding athlete at Revere High (Class of 2013) and then went on to Framingham State College, said she has been pleased with her team’s pre-season effort.

“We had an organized play day in Revere on Saturday, including other varsity teams from Pentucket, Georgetown, and Winthrop,” said Rotger. “This was a great opportunity to play great teams and get better.

“For the rest of the season, we want to see the kids continue to bring great effort in practice and try to build a better culture of getting better every day,” she added.

The 2022 edition of the Lady Patriot laxers will be led by senior captains Skyla DeSimone and Angela Huynh.

Rounding out the varsity roster are: seniors Dianne Mancio and Zoey LeGrand; juniors Dania Alvarez, Sophia Zari, Gweneth Ke, Hana Aklog,  Emanuelle Menezes, Angelina Marin, Lymberlee Leng; Melisa Devedzic, Leena Menkah, Marianna Tamayo, Shirley Rodriguez, Mariah Rogers, and goalie Aya Elkawakibi; and sophomores Briana Mendieta, Hadia Bellemisch, and Chantal Fontanelli.

After tomorrow’s opener, Rotger and her crew will trek to Somerville on Friday and to Cambridge on Saturday.

Their first home game on the turf at Harry Della Russo Stadium (HDR) is set for next Wednesday at 4:00 with Malden.

The Revere High softball team also greets a new head coach for 2022, Megan O’Donnell, who is taking over the reins of the softball program from long-time head coach Joe Ciccarello.

“I have big shoes to fill because coach Cic’ was a tremendous coach,” said O’Donnell.

The 2021 team, which competed in the pandemic-shortened spring season, was comprised entirely of seniors, which means that O’Donnell will be fielding a relatively young and inexperienced squad.

The 2022 edition will be led by senior captains Astrid Noriega and Lilian Calderon. Other members of the varsity team are Reem Elouardi, Arianna Keohane, Hana Menkari, Isabella Qualtieri, Luiza Santos, Ally Straccia, Riley Straccia, Bella  Stamatopoulos, Emma Cassinello, Lea  Doucette, Kelren Fernandes Dias, Brianna Miranda, Jordan Martelli, and Juliana Bolton.

“We just made teams on Friday,” said O’Donnell. “This is a whole brand-new team, since last year we took all 11 seniors due to COVID. So this is going to be a rebuilding year, but with a bright future ahead.”

O’Donnell’s crew has two scrimmages planned for this week and will open their season this Monday (April 4) at Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Lynn Classical. They will play at Lynn English next Wednesday.

The team’s 19-game schedule will feature two games each against their seven GBL foes (Lynn English, Lynn Classical, Malden, Medford, Somerville, Everett, and Chelsea) and non-league encounters with Weston (two games), Northeast Regional (two games), and O’Bryant High of Boston.

The RHS baseball team, under the direction of head coach Michael Manning, will kick off their season when they host Lynn Classical on Monday and Lynn English next Wednesday. The Patriots’ 20-game schedule will consist of 14 encounters with their seven GBL rivals and six games with non-league foes Swampscott, Boston Latin (two games), Cambridge, Mystic Valley, and East Boston.

Coach Zach McDannell and the RHS boys lacrosse team swings into action at Lynn next Wednesday.

The boys and girls outdoor track programs, which are coming off championship indoor seasons in the GBL under head coaches Sam Ros for the boys and Racquel MacDonald for the girls, will open their 2022 campaigns this Friday with a meet against Lynn Classical at 4:00 on the track and turf at HDR.

The RHS tennis teams also swing into action this week under the guidance of veteran coaches Mike Flynn and Carla Maniscalco. Flynn’s boys will host Somerville tomorrow (Thursday) and Maniscalco’s girls will host Somerville on Friday. All of the teams’ home matches will be played on the courts at Gibson Park.

The boys will trek to Lynn Classical on Monday and to Lynn English on Wednesday, while the girls will host both of those teams on the same days. Both squads will play a 12-game schedule against their six GBL rivals. (Chelsea does not have a tennis team).

The Revere High boys’ volleyball program under the direction of coach Lianne Mimmo will open their season when they host Pioneer Charter School on Monday and Medford next Wednesday.
