Smoking Ban – City, Dcr Should Follow Boston’s Lead

The City of Revere should be thinking about banning smoking in public places and so too should the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Boston is now considering such an order as two Boston City Councillors have made the suggestion.

Some believe this type of ban on public smoking would be too much of a government intrusion into our privacy and rights.

We disagree.

Smoking kills. Breathing in secondary smoke is dangerous. More than that.

It is aggravating to be seated on your towel on the beach only to be forced to inhale cigarette smoke from the person smoking next to you.

It may be unconstitutional to enact such a ban but many of us would welcome the end of smoking in public places.

Though some people say that it is an invasion on privacy and rights, what about the privacy of nonsmokers? Why should someone who makes choices that will have a negative health impact get more freedom than those who make wiser decisions? Things that get in the way of other people’s well being and happiness should not be allowed in a public setting.

I think the proposal is a bit over the top, but if Boston does it, I hope Revere does too. Otherwise, Revere Beach will become the skanky smokers’ beach.

Would you also welcome an unconstitutional law banning free speech in public?
The Bill Of Rights is there to protect ALL of us for a good reason.
If we allow a person’s rights to be denied some of the time, then we will ALL lose them all of the time.

People have the choice to do what they want. if they wana eat bad food, and mess up and smoke, thats their fault. Controlling where they smoke is almost like controlling where you and me eat. THATS SOCIALISM
