RHS boys basketball team hosts Salem in season opener

Coach Rick Hayes and his Revere High boys basketball team will open their 2010-2011 season Tuesday evening, hosting perennial Northeastern Conference powerhouse Salem at the RHS fieldhouse.

The Patriots will be led by their senior captain, Trae Weathers, who has been a double figure scorer the past two seasons. Trae hit for 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds per game last year.

“Trae is a two time NEC all star whom we will be depending upon once again in so many ways,” said Hayes.

Senior guard Greg Cabral also is back after coming off a superb campaign last season in which he averaged almost 16 points per game. “Greg worked hard in the off season and is even better,” said his coach. “He should have an outstanding year for us.”

Sean Quiroz, a transfer from Chelsea, whom Hayes labeled as a “true point guard” will be expected to direct the Patriot offense. Senior Paul Norton and 6-4 junior Chris Palladino, a transfer from St. Mary’s, will provide rebounding strength in the front court.

Junior Dom Boyce and senior Frank Colleran both saw a lot of minutes last year and will do so again. Among the new faces on the Revere bench will be junior Sodawine Nov, senior Sorathana Kniung, Alex Urena, Quinton Werley, and junior Joseph Aut.

“We’ll be looking to run and that means that defensive rebounding will be a key for us,” noted Hayes.

After Tuesday’s encounter with Salem, Hayes and crew will travel to Lynn Classical Friday.
