Girls basketball team opens season Tuesday at Salem

Coach Diana DeCristoforo and her dynamic Revere High girls basketball team will open their 2010-2011 season Tuesday at Salem, a rival in the Large Division of the Northeastern Conference.

Although expectations will be high for the Lady Patriots, who are coming off a superlative 16-4 season and have their top six players returning, DeCristoforo said her team will be taking it one game at a time.

“Every game will be our biggest game,” said the coach. “We certainly will be out to continue the trend we began last year, but we play in a strong league and every night will be a battle. The only thing I will promise is that the team will compete and run as hard as we can in every game we play.”

The Lady Pats will be led by a quartet of senior captains, forward Morgan Jenkins, point guard Marissa Parent, and centers Melissa Adreani and Ashley DiFraia. Jenkins is a returning NEC all star who may be the best player in the league, coming off a huge season in which she averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds. Morgan recently received a four year scholarship for basketball to St. Michael’s College in Vermont, a Division 2 school.

Sophomores Gena Restiano at guard and Caitlyn Caramello at forward, both of whom were major contributors last year, round out the starting lineup.

Among those whom DeCristoforo will be counting upon to make major contributions off the bench are junior forward Michaela Maguire and sophomore forward Amy Rotger. Two Lady Patriots, Kat Prince (ankle injury) and Venous Hamza (concussion), presently are on the disabled list. Raquelle MacDonald, a superb all around athlete, unfortunately tore an ACL and is out for the season.

The Revere girls will host Lynn Classical in their home opener next Friday evening.
