She Always Chose To See the Good in Everyone, She Was Unpretentious, Selfless and Kind

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend Visiting Hours today, Wednesday, October 25th from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Vertuccio, Smith & Vazza Beechwood Home for Funerals, 262 Beach St., Revere for Elli (Fanikos) Catalucci. Following a long illness, Elli died peacefully at home with her daughter and son by her side. She was 94 years old.

A Funeral Service will take place at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 54 South Common St., Lynn at 12 noon on Thursday, October 26th. Interment will immediately follow at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, 185 Lake St., Peabody.

Elli was born in East Boston on April 29, 1929 to the late Gregory and Louise (Papavrami) Fanikos. The second of six children, she attended Revere Public Schools and graduated from Revere High School in 1947.

During her school years, Elli developed a talent for sewing, even winning a sterling silver thimble in a sewing competition. It became a lifelong hobby and until her last days she could be found happily restitching a torn seam or mending a hole in a sweater.

In 1948, Elli began working at Revere Insurance Agency. During this time, she started dating her future husband, Aldo Catalucci and after a long courtship, they married in September of 1958. Within a few years, Elli left her job and devoted herself to raising their two children. A warm and loving wife and mother, Elli was the heart and soul of her family.

Elli cultivated many friendships, and of special importance to her was her club, The Niners. The group included nine women who would meet once a month for decades, establishing close relationships that would last throughout their lifetimes.

Aldo and Elli enjoyed the company of others and their home was a gathering spot for many. No matter the time of day or night, friends and family would stop by for coffee, conversation and to enjoy Elli’s famous brownies and “golden cups.”

Ever proud of her family, she would tell anyone she met that she was an “Aunt” to 64… a number that included 18 nieces and nephews, 41 grandnieces and grandnephews and five great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews!

Boating was also a favorite pastime and Aldo and Elli were longtime members of the Winthrop Yacht Club. Weekends were spent on the boat with their children and included fishing, scuba-diving and visiting

the Boston Harbor Islands.

Once her children were older, Elli took a job with Lattanzi Insurance Agency. She had a strong work ethic and no interest in retiring. When her boss recognized her many years of employment with a beautiful gold

watch, it was one of her proudest moments.

After her husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Elli cared for him for several years with patience and a sense of humor, never wavering in her devotion. Following Aldo’s passing, she lived on her own in the

home they had shared.

Curious and engaged throughout her life, Elli could often be found at her kitchen table with a cup of coffee, reading the Globe or the Revere Journal from front to back.

She spent her later years enjoying time with her children, siblings and lifelong friends. Elli always chose to see the good in

everyone. She was unpretentious, selfless and kind. Loved and adored by those who knew her, she will be greatly missed.
