RHS Softball Corrals Mustangs, Topples Medford From First

The Revere High softball team pulled off the upset of the season in the Greater Boston League (GBL) last Wednesday at the St. Mary’s field when the Lady Patriots defeated Medford, which had entered the contest tied for first place in the GBL with Everett, by a score of 9-6.

Coach Megan O’Donnell’s Lady Patriots put it all together in the victory, with the trifecta of solid pitching, excellent defense, and timely hitting.

Isabella Qualtieri earned the “W” in the pitcher’s circle, allowing just five hits and striking out four Lady Mustang batters over the seven-inning route. She forced the Medford hitters into 11 ground-outs, which her teammates in the field handled adroitly to keep the Lady Mustangs at bay.

The Revere offense asserted control of the contest from the outset in resounding fashion when Ally Straccia led off with a home run.

After a double by Lea Doucette, Shayna Smith walked and Emma Cassinello followed with another two-bagger, driving in both of her teammates. Jordan Martelli then delivered another double to score Cassinello for a 4-0 Revere lead.

Arianna Keohane came through with a base hit, but the inning ended with the Lady Patriots stranding two runners.

Revere produced another run in the third inning. Cassinello and Brianna Miranda singled, with Cassinello moving to third, from where Emma scored on a ground-out by Martelli.

In the fourth, after Qualtieri led off with a single, Medford intentionally walked Straccia. However, Doucette made the Medford strategy backfire by blasting a three-run homer over the fence for an 8-3 Revere lead.

The Lady Patriots tacked on an extra insurance run In the bottom of the sixth when Straccia singled and came home on a double to the fence by Smith.

“We had solid defense from Riley Straccia, who vacuumed up everything in the infield,” said O’Donnell. “Arianna Keohan, Jordan Martelli, and Brianna Miranda took care of the outfield with some solid catches to close out the game. This Medford game was a complete team win which the girls totally deserved. They put everything they had into this win and played as a team.”

The Revere victory benefited O’Donnell’s former coach at Everett High, Stacy Poste-Schiavo (who is in her 25th year at the helm of the Lady Crimson Tide), by moving Everett into sole possession of first place in the GBL.

This past Friday the Lady Patriots traveled to O’Bryant High and came up short, 6-3. Revere held the lead for most of the game until O’Bryant rallied in the bottom of the sixth to claim the victory.

The Lady Patriots once again struck early. Qualtieri led off with a double down the line, followed by a hard-hit ball by Doucette that the O’Bryant second baseman was unable to handle. Smith then belted a gapper for a two-run double and Frankie Reed smacked a line drive base hit to score Smith.

However, that would prove to be the extent of the Revere offense for the rest of the day, though Arianna Keohan had two hits.

“Our infield, led by Riley Straccia, played well until O’Bryant’s bats got hot in the bottom of the sixth putting the ball in places we weren’t,” noted O’Donnell.

This past Monday, the Lady Patriots took on Chelsea and earned a 28-4 victory.

“Chelsea is a well-coached and hard-working team,” said O’Donnell. “No matter what the score was, the Chelsea girls went out and gave it their all the whole time. Their shortstop Yara Gonzales and catcher Juju Hassell were true leaders of that team. Coach Gena Restiano is doing a great job with the girls.”

Freshman Danni-Hope Randall had a career high of 14 strikeouts, giving up just two hits in the victory.

“Our bats showed up,” noted O’Donnell. The stat line for the Lady Patriots was as follows:

Isabella Qualtieri was 1-3 with a walk; Arianna Keohan had two walks; Ally Straccia went 3-3 with a double and two singles; Myla Cassinell had two walks; Lea Doucette went 2-3 with a single, a double, and a walk; Shayna Smith went 1-2 with a single and a walk; Frankie Reed was 2-4 with 2 walks and two singles; Emma Cassinello was 2-4 with two singles and a walk; Jordan Martelli was 2-4 with a double, single, a hit by pitch, and a walk; Brianna Miranda was 3-4 with three singles and walk; Luiza Santos was 2-4 with two singles and two walks; and Riley Straccia earned four walks.
