RHS Baseball Team Defeats Medford, 15-5

The Revere High baseball team broke into the victory column in a big way with a 15-5 victory over Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Medford in the Patriots’ home opener this past Monday.

After spotting the visiting Mustangs a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, the Patriots responded in the bottom of the frame when senior Mike Popp led off with a double and was promptly brought home on a base hit by senior Chris Cassidy.

Medford extended its lead to 5-1 in the third, capitalizing on several Revere errors in the infield, an unfortunate and similar occurrence over the Patriots’ first few games this season.

But that would prove to be the apogee of the Mustangs’ visit to Tony Conigliaro Field. Revere exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third, five runs in the fifth, and two more in the sixth to end the game per the mercy rule.

While the Revere bats were pounding away, RHS starter Kyle Cummings got stronger as the game went on, tossing shutout baseball after the third to post the “W.” Kyle’s impressive final line showed six innings pitched, six hits, three earned runs, two walks, and six strikeouts.

Six Patriots (seniors Chris Cecca, Popp, and Cassidy and juniors Cummings, Andrew Leone, and Ollie Svendsen) recorded multiple hits on the day. Popp and Cummings left the yard with home runs.

In addition, Revere had a whopping 10 stolen bases.

The victory was a nice bounce-back win for coach Michael Manning and his crew after a pair of losses in the opening week at GBL foes Lynn Classical (7-3) and Lynn English (10-9).

In the English contest, the Patriots grabbed a 4-0 lead in the top of the first when senior Giancarlo Miro and Popp drew walks and fellow senior Dom Boudreau lashed a base hit. Another base hit by Cummings produced two runs and an error on a grounder by Leone brought in two more teammates.

However, Revere’s advantage proved to be short-lived, as the Bulldogs posted six markers in its half of the inning and then tacked on two more tallies in the second to make it 8-4.

Revere got one back in the third when a grounder by Boudreau scored Miro, who had led off the inning with a walk, but English responded in kind to leave matters at 9-5 after three.

The Patriots closed the gap to 9-8 with three runs in the fourth. After Leone reached on an error and Svendsen drew a walk, Cassidy plated Leone with a single. Cecca then delivered a huge pinch-hit double that scored both Svendsen and Leone to make it a one-run game.

English tallied a run in its half of the fourth on a sacrifice fly, but Revere once again drew within a run when Cassidy singled home Leone in the fifth.

Revere mounted a rally in the top of the seventh when Cummings led off with a double, but Kyle was cut down at the plate on a base hit by Svendsen, ending the Patriots’ chances.

“We had a challenging opening week, both in our execution and also with our mental approach.  We definitely kind of lost our heads against Lynn English,” said Manning, whose squad made five errors in the contest. “It really hurt us.

“We didn’t even practice the Thursday following the Lynn English game,” Manning continued. “We held a 2.5 hour team meeting and had a great dialogue among the players and coaches on what we all needed to do to get back on track this year and become the team we know we can be.

“I’m so proud of how the boys responded in a big way against Medford,” the coach added. “We got punched in the mouth early and kept our composure and showed what we are capable of when we keep our focus for a full game.”

Manning and his crew have a busy week ahead. They were scheduled to meet non-league opponent Cambridge yesterday (Tuesday) and will host GBL foe Chelsea today (Wednesday). They will trek to GBL rivals Malden on the holiday on Monday and to Everett next Wednesday.

Boys Tennis Team Gaining Experience

Although the Revere High boys tennis team came up short in its matches this past week, RHS head coach Mike Flynn has been pleased with the effort of his young team.

In a contest with Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Lynn English last Wednesday, the Patriots put up a fierce battle.

“We were shorthanded, but the players played well and gave a great effort,” said Flynn. “Moises Alfaro played a really strong match against a good player at first singles. He won the fist set, 6-2, dropped the second,3-6, and then played a third-set tiebreaker for the match which the English player won, 7-3.

“Nick Aguilar played a very strong match against a good #2 player and lost a close match 6-2, 7-6 (7-5),” Flynn continued. “Raihan Ahmed and Nick Barry played a very strong first doubles team and lost 6-2, 6-0.”

The Patriots then took on defending GBL champ Malden this past Monday.

“With Malden having a dominant #1 and excellent #2, both teams adjusted our lineups,” said Flynn. “This provided an opportunity for new players to get match experience in singles or doubles.

“Malden may be the best team in the GBL, but our team competed well and played a strong match,” Flynn added.

The trio of Raihan Ahmed, Nick Barry, and Vincent Phan all had the chance to play their first singles matches.

“All were new to singles and competed very well,” noted Flynn.

“Alec Waxer and Nick Aguilar had an opportunity to play against two excellent Malden players, including the most dominant player in the GBL the last four years, and played very well,” Flynn added. “Seamus Duffey and Sergio Osoria also gained valuable experience playing at second doubles.”

Flynn and his crew were scheduled to take on non-league opponent Boston Latin yesterday (Tuesday). They will host GBL foes Medford on Monday and Everett next Wednesday during the vacation week. Both of those matches are scheduled for 10:00 in the morning at the Gibson Park courts.
