Porrazzo reflects on past season, looks ahead to next

With the 2023 season now in the rear-view mirror for his young team, Revere High girls basketball head coach Chris Porrrazo looked back on the recently-completed campaign and looked ahead to 2024.

“As we walked off the court after losing to Hamilton-Wenham 45-28, we couldn’t help the strange mix of emotions we were all feeling,” said Porrazzo after his team’s season finale that left the Lady Patriots with a final record of 6-14 overall and 6-8 in the Greater Boston League.

“Playing a varsity sport is a huge commitment. It takes a lot of sacrifices from coaches and players to be a part of our high school basketball program. We all felt a mix of gratitude and sadness after the game, along with feelings of hope and excitement for the future,” Porrazzo continued.

“I want to thank all the members of our varsity team. For our juniors, Haley Belloise, Bella Stamatopoulos and Rocio Gonzalez, the next time they step on a varsity basketball court they will be seniors,” said the coach.

“For our sophomores, Belma Velic, Marwa Riad, Nisrin Sekkat, Lea Doucette, Lorena Martinez, and Daniela Murillo, their high school hourglass will be bottom-heavy the next time they take the court,” Porrazzo added.

“And for our lone freshman, Shayna Smith, who has a bright future ahead of her, she will be an old head of the program before she knows it,” he noted.

“Thank you to coaches Michael Micciche and Ariana Rivera. It’s crazy that next season will be our third together and this program is lucky to have them both. And a thank you to our first year coaches, Nicholas Canelas and Elizabeth Lake. We couldn’t have asked for much more out of those two this season and our program is better for it,” Porrazzo said.

“It’s a crazy concept that we were just together almost every day for three months and then abruptly, it all just ends. When we all get together this November for the 2023-2024 season, we will have had another year of growth and experience from our own lives that we will carry with us to become the fabric of the culture of our team. The last two seasons we were Tough, Smart and Together, we were Solid, Steady and Strong, we did the things that Take No Talent, and next year we plan to not just play basketball, but to love basketball,” Porrazzo continued. “Whatever our identity becomes next season this group has the foundation for success. We all take that as a responsibility and as motivation to make this past season mean more than our record shows. Until then, it’s back to the lab this summer for the RHS Lady Patriots,” Porrazzo concluded.
