Bettero Pours in 25 Points in Non-League Game Versus Winthrop

Following up on an All-Scholastic soccer season in which she shattered all of Revere High’s scoring records, Carolina Bettero continues to establish herself as one of the state’s best athletes.

Bettero, a 5-foot-9-inch senior captain, scored 25 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and made seven steals in Revere High’s tough 44-42 loss to Winthrop in a non-league game last Friday. Included in Bettero’s dynamic performance were two difficult floater-swishes while soaring through the paint. Bettero scored Revere’s first 12 points of the game and later sparked a fourth-quarter rally (from an 11-point deficit) that fell just short. Twice Bettero stole the basketball at midcourt and made layups, the latter closing the margin to two points with five seconds left. However, Winthrop was able to inbound the ball twice to run out the clock.

Bettero is averaging 15 points and nine rebounds per game and has emerged as a Greater Boston League MVP candidate. She was named the 2021 GBL soccer Co-MVP and to the Globe and Herald All-Scholastic Teams.

“Carolina played an unbelievable game against Winthrop,” said Revere head coach Chris Porrazzo, who also lauded the senior’s work ethic. “She’s been coming in early before practices and lifting weights. She’s the first girl there every Sunday ready to take extra shots before practice. She’s really dedicated herself to this season.”

Porrazzo was an assistant coach on Megan O’Donnell’s staff for the RHS girls soccer team this season as Bettero surpassed the 100-goal milestone. “She’s just an all-around good athlete and an excellent basketball player, too,” said Porrazzo.

An outstanding student, Bettero has not made her choice of college yet, but Northeastern University is reportedly high on the list.

Revere fell to Peabody, 74-29, Monday at the Roland Merullo Fieldhouse. Skyla DeSimone led Revere with 13 points. Carolina Bettero had seven points. Bella Stamatopoulos scored five points.

Revere appeared to be on the road to giving an excellent Peabody team (8-1) a challenge when DeSimone hit an amazing 35-footer off the glass with three seconds left in the first quarter. But Peabody’s Abigail Bettencourt immediately responded with a 40-foot bank shot at the buzzer to make it 23-10 after one quarter. “That was a really deflating moment,” said Chris Porrazzo.

Peabody led 38-23 at the break and then held Revere to six points in the second half.

Revere was without improving sophomore point guard Haley Belloise, who left in the first quarter with an injury.

DeSimone had a huge three-pointer (and was fouled on the successful shot) at the height of Revere’s furious comeback against Winthrop. Sophomore forward Lea Doucette boosted Revere’s comeback with four rebounds in the Winthrop game.

Revere (4-4) plays Somerville Thursday and has games with Lynn Classical and Lynn English next week that will go a long way toward determining the GBL champion.

Peabody Baseball Star Steve Lomasney Was in Attendance

One of Peabody High’s top basketball players is sophomore Logan Lomasney. Logan is the daughter of former Peabody High football and baseball star Steve Lomasney.

Steve, who was in the stands at Merullo Fieldhouse Monday, was a great catcher for the Tanners when Al Blasi’s Revere team boasted two future Major League draft picks, Mike Spinelli and Frankie Candela, on its roster, along with University of New Haven catcher David Lightbody and Mike Popp, who were also GBL All-Stars. Lomasney was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the fifth round of the 1995 MLB Draft. Spinelli was selected by the Red Sox in the fourth round. Candela was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the fifth round of the 1997 MLB Draft. In one of the Revere-Peabody games, Mike Spinelli took the mound against Peabody southpaw Mike Proto, who went on to pitch for Clemson University. Lomasney scored the winning run in a 1-0 pitcher’s duel. “There were 30 Major League scouts there that day,” recalled Lomasney, who now owns The Show Baseball Academy in Peabody.
