The Revere Hhigh School girls basketball team was rewarded with the No. 1 seed in the Div. 1 North Sectional following a 20-0 regular season. The Patriots host Lynn English tomorrow night.

Thursday will mark one of the biggest days in Revere High School sports in quite some time as the undefeated (20-0) and number one seeded girls basketball team takes the home court against Lynn English in its first game of this year’s State Tournament.

The girls were picked the number one seed for the Division 1 North Tournament last Friday when brackets were made public. If they prevail against Lynn English – which they’ve played twice this year already and beaten both times – they could face either Lincoln-Sudbury or Medford.

It’s the first time in recent history that any Revere sports team has received a number one seed in a State Tournament.

Athletic Director Shaun Hart said he feels the excitement of the community and is expecting a large crowd at the Field House.

“I think the city is waiting for this game,” he said. “I’m excited and I can’t wait … I’m hoping the place is packed. These girls deserve a sell-out crowd cheering for them because of what they’ve accomplished.”

Superintendent Paul Dakin and Hart said that they have the facility ready, though they had hoped to get some renovations done before the tournament schedule started.

They will have all the bleachers down and have had a crew in to prepare the facility for a large crowd.

The team has certainly created a buzz in a good portion of the city and Dakin and Hart said it is great for the entire school system.

“This girls team is where it started last year in trying to instill pride in the program and that winning here is possible – even though some people in the past wouldn’t say that,” said Hart.

Added Dakin, “Tournament games have a positive energy. It’s a good thing and it’s a great environment. When the kids haven’t experienced it and begin to experience it from a fan or player perspective, it does a lot for school spirit and for building a winning way in all sports. Tournament games can really build community spirit.”

The Revere girls will tip off against Lynn English at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 3.
