We believe the government response to the oil spill drama playing itself out along the southern coast of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida has been lame and ill-advised.
If ever there was a moment to put 200,000 unemployed people to work maintaining the coastline this was it – and it remains so to this moment.
The oil is still spewing from the broken well at a rate of millions of gallons a week, causing thousands of miles of pristine shoreline to be wrecked.
If ever there was a moment when the government could have stepped up to the plate to protect the affected areas with a superhuman effort, this was it.
Instead, the oil is floating ashore, ruining everything in its wake and the president is making trips to the area to show he cares.
Decisive action needs to be taken – and soon.
