Rita McGuirk, 94

Popular Longtime Hilltop Steak House Waitress

Rita M. (Caissie) McGuirk of Revere died on October 18 at Eastpointe Nursing Center of Chelsea following a brief illness. She was 94 years old.

Born in Chelsea, she was a lifelong resident of Revere and a graduate of Revere High School, Class of 1932. She was a long time active member of the Immaculate Conception Parish, Revere and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW 6712 of Beachmont.

Mrs. McGuirk retired from Hilltop Steak House in Saugus in 1984, at age 70, serving at that facility for more than 25 years. She also worked at several other area restaurants before Hilltop.

She was the wife of the late John W. McGuirk; devoted mother of M. Margaret "Peggy" Spinazzola and her husband, Michael, of Melbourne, FL, Lillian M. Graf of Georgetown, Rita C. "Sissy" Ducey and her husband, William, of Revere and the late John F. McGuirk; dear sister of Frederick Caissie and Christine LeClair, both of Gulfport, FL., Theresa Kearns of Everett and the late Melvin and Albert Caissie, Jeanne Caissie and Delia McLaughlin; beloved sister in-law of Alice Lane of Bridgewater and Joseph McGuirk of Virginia. She is also lovingly survived by 15 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, one great great grandson and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to visit with the family on Thursday, October 21 in The Vertuccio Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Rte 107) Revere from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass in the Immaculate Conception Church, Revere at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Dorothy D’Ettore, 70

Retired Medical Assistant

Dorothy C. D’Ettore of Tileston Road, Winthrop, died suddenly at the Salem Hospital on October 18. She was 70 years old.

Born in East Boston, the daughter of the late Theresa and Carmello Iudica, she was a resident of Winthrop for more than five years and also lived in Revere and Malden. Prior to her retirement, she was a long time medical assistant for Dr. Usha DeSai.

She was the beloved wife of the late Vincent D’Ettore and the loving mother of Sandra Sparacino of Winthrop, Mark D’Ettore of Peabody, David D’Ettore of Revere and Steven D’Ettore of Winthrop; sister of Lillian Iudica of Revere and Robert Iudica of Saugus and the cherished grandma "dooda" to Ashley, Vinny and Mark Jr.

Her funeral will be conducted from the Ernest P. Carmella Witter, 91

Of Revere, formerly of East Boston

Carmella M. ( Gambardella) Witter of Revere, formerly of Medford and East Boston, died on October 17. She was in her 91st year.

The beloved wife of the late Andrew Witter, she was the loving mother of Andrea Anastas and her husband, Neil, of Amesbury; dear sister of the Late Antoinetta Zaffino, Josephine Wardell, Domenic, Gaetano, Vincent and Andrew Gambardella; cherished grandmother of Neil Jr, Cheryl, Andrew and Adam Anastas and great grandmother of Alivia Grace, Kayla Marlene and Kaiden Luke Anastas.

Richard Hughes, 75

Union Organizer, Worked for State House of Representatives

Richard G."Dick" Hughes of Everett died on October 16. He was 75 years old.

Mr. Hughes was employed by the Massachusetts House of Representatives for the past 36 years, currently serving as Research Director in the Department of Personnel and Administration and, until 1990, he was the Director of Constituent Services for the Speaker of the House.

He was a 19 year member and former organizer for the Teamsters Union. A former employee of Whitings Milk Company, he was a member of the Winthrop Golf Club.

Mr. Hughes enlisted in the US Army and served in the Infantry in Korea during the Korean War from 1954 to 1956.

He was the beloved husband of Rosemary "Bunnie" (Catalucci) Hughes; dear father of Elizabeth A. Vander Aarde and her husband, John, of Minnesota, Richard H. Hughes and his wife, Deborah, of Melrose, Rosemary A. Hughes of Everett and her dear friend, Keith Houghton, Meaghan E. Verri and her husband, Joseph, of Marlboro; brother of the late Ann Hughes; son of the late Henry G. and Madeline Rose (Barry) Hughes; dear brother-in-law of William "Billy" Catalucci and his wife, Christine, of New Hampshire and is also lovingly survived by eight grandchildren, Jack, Sam, Max Vander Aarde, Kaitlin, Joseph, Madeline Hughes, Jack and Nicholas Verri.

Geraldine R. "Gerrie" "Babe" (Walsh) Joslin of Woburn died suddenly on October 13.

She was the beloved wife of Rodrick "Rick"; loving mother of Carter Joslin of Woburn and Cortney Walsh of Wilmington; stepmother of Rick Joslin of Acton, Megan Joslin of Merrimack, NH and Donna Joslin of Woburn; loving grandmother of Joseph S. Constantino, II, who was born on Oct. 15, 2009; sister of Kathleen M. Fischer of Londonderry, NH, Paula A. Hyde of Quincy, Michael A. Eskholme of Revere and the late Robert H. Walsh, II; daughter-in-law of Marion Carter of Maine and Alan Joslin of New York and is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and close friends.

Frank P. Vera of Revere, formerly of Quincy, died on October 13.

A US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was a recipient of the Bronze Star and The Purple Heart and a member of Carpenters Union Local 40.

He was the beloved husband of Christina (Herbert); dear brother of the late Ruth, Mac, Shirley and Richard and is also survived by his loving step son Liam O’Brien and his wife, Josephine, and their daughter, Jamie, of Seabrook NH.

Jennie F. (Giambartolomei) Giannone-Guerra of Ipswich, formerly of Peabody and East Boston, died on October 16.

The beloved wife of the late Anthony "Tony" Guerra and Donald Giannone, she was the loving mother of Vincent Guerra, John Guerra and Grace Guerra and her husband, James, all of Peabody, Donna Giannone-Bonanno and her husband, Joseph, of Gloucester and the late Anthony Giannone Sr.; dear sister of Catherine Esposito of New Mexico, Angie Faretra of Manchester by the Sea, Anthony Bartolomi of East Boston, Dino Giambartolomei of Revere and the late Agnes DiLisi, John and Loretta Giambartolomei. She was the cherished grandmother of 11 and great grandmother of one.

Angelina Ann (Ferragamo) Shumata, a lifelong Revere resident, died on October 15.

She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph; devoted mother of Phyllis Johanson and her husband, Alan, of Revere and the late Walter Shumata; dear sister of the late Alice Constantino, Fiore, John and Christopher Ferragamo; loving grandmother of Laurie West of Beverly, David Johanson of Danvers and her three great grandchildren, Ashley and Marissa West and Noah Johanson. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Lawrence Nicolini Jr., 90

Retired Air Traffic Controller, Charter Member of Beachmont DAV

Lawrence Nicolini Jr. of Danvers died on October 15. He was 90 years old.

Born in Boston on Jan. 9, 1919, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Rebecca (Brady) Nicolini. He was raised in Revere’s Beachmont section and was a graduate of Revere High School, Class of 1936. Mr. Nicolini served honorably in World War II, obtaining the rank of staff sergeant while serving in the European Theater.

Employed as an FAA air traffic controller, he worked at both the Boston Center at Logan Airport, and the New England Center in Nashua until the time of his retirement. Following retirement, he worked for several years at the Myopia Hunt Club.

An avid sports fan and golfer, Mr. Nicolini was a charter member of the Beachmont VFW Post 6712 and a member of the DAV. A Danvers resident for 50 years and a founding communicant of Saint Richard Church, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Thomas E. Power Council 1505.

He was the husband of the late Margaret (Meehan) Nicolini with whom he shared 40 years of marriage. He is survived by a son, William Nicolini of Danvers, a daughter, Mary Elaine Nicolini of Eastham, two sisters and their husbands, Paula and William DeCain and Florence and William Boudreau, two brothers-in-law, Dominic Parro and Joseph Simonson, a dear friend, Deborah Kay DeMaso, and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John Nicolini, Ernestine Parro, Constance Simonson, and Phyllis Chaffey.

Maria (Angelo) Amari died in Revere on October 14. She was 101 years old.

She was the beloved wife of the late Vito and loving mother of Joseph and his wife, Marie Amari, of Revere; loving grandmother of John and his wife, Cheryl Amari, of Tewksbury and is also survived by her two great grandchildren, Jill and Lilly.

Lena Patricia DeSimone

Of New Hampshire, formerly of Revere

Lena Patricia (Aloia) DeSimone of New Hampshire, formerly of Revere, died on October 11.

The beloved wife of the late Lucas DeSimone, she was the devoted mother of Marguerite Fleury of Revere, Patricia Eaton and Camille Flaherty of New Hampshire; dear sister of Joseph Aloia of Tennessee and the late Nellie Solari, Rose Aloia and Florence DeSimone. She is also survived by three loving grandchildren, Michelle Fleury, Mark Eaton and Christina Flaherty.

Ralph Curdo, 93

GE Retiree

Ralph H. Curdo died at the Anysley Assisted Living Home in Nashua, NH on October 13. He was 93 years old.

Born in Lynn on April 18, 1916, he was the son of Herbert and Florence (Hayden) Curdo. He grew up in Lynn, graduated from Lynn Classical High School and later joined the General Electric Apprentice Program and became a Mechanical Inspector on the J79 Turbine Engine. He left GE to join the US Army in World War II and became a Tech Sergeant. After the war, he returned to GE and resumed his position until his retirement in 1988 after 47 years of service.

He married Eleanor DeGruttola on August 31, 1941 and they shared 66 years together until she died on November 28, 2007. They raised their two sons Stephen and Gerard in Revere and Everett. The couple lived in Everett until 2006 when they decided to move closer to their sons in New Hampshire. After Mrs. Curdo’s death, he continued a very comfortable life at the Aynsley Place in Nashua through the exceptional loving care and support from the dedicated staff and his loving family.

His surviving family includes his two sons, Stephen and his wife, Maureen, of Hollis, NH and Gerard and his fiancé, Monica Landry, of Merrimack, NH; his grandchildren Mark Curdo and his, fiancé Kristen Lofgren, Melissa, Danielle and Nicole Curdo and the late Michael Curdo; his sisters Dorothy Bowers of Lynn and the late Eleanor Borelli.

Sandra Nappi, 68

Waitress, Bank Teller and Lynn School System employee

Sandra L. (Miller) Nappi, a lifelong resident of Lynn, died October 13 at Salem Hospital after a brief illness. She was 68 years old.

The wife of 39 years of John F. Nappi, she was born in Lynn, the daughter of Claire L. (Murphy)(Miller) Bissell of Lynn and of the late Charles A. Miller. She graduated from Lynn English High School, Class of 1958.

She first worked as a waitress at the former Chateau de Ville, Saugus, and then worked at several other restaurants. She was then a teller at the Security National Bank on Eastern Avenue. Most recently she was a house worker for the Lynn School system until her retirement. She loved gardening and her pets.

In addition to her husband and mother, she leaves three sons, Mark Bushnell of Lynn, Michael Bushnell of Maine, and Mitchell Nappi and his wife, Kristina, of Revere; a sister, Donna Keaney, and her husband, Edward, of Lynn; five grandchildren, Renelle and Brittany Sonia, Nicholas Bushnell, Elizabeth and Victoria Nappi, and several nieces and nephews.

Jack (Jacob) Kaplan, 98

Owned Winter Hill Drug Company, member of Congregation Ahabat Shalom of Lynn

Jack (Jacob) Kaplan of Boca Raton, Florida died on October 12. He was 98 years old.

The beloved husband of the late Rebecca (Waldman) Kaplan, he was born in Poland, attended the Revere schools, graduated from Revere High School and Middlesex College in Waltham. He furthered his education at the Patrick School of Pharmacy and was the owner of Winter Hill Drug Company. He was a member of the Massachusetts Pharmacy Society, Congregation Ahabat Sholom of Lynn and the Aleppo Shriners. He was also a Mason and life member at the Valley of Boston AASR Northern Masonic Jurisdiction.

He was the devoted father of Stephen J. Kaplan and his friend, Phyllis Weprin; the dear brother of the late Myer Kaplan, Charlotte Snow, Esther Kaplan, and Goldie Snow and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
