Former mayor, longtime city councillor is said to be ‘stable but gravely ill’ at the Youville Hospital

Word spread quickly Monday and Tuesday that Councillor George V. Colella – once the longest serving mayor in the city’s history – was gravely ill at Youville Hospital in Cambridge.

Friends and confidants who had visited him Tuesday said he was “stable but gravely ill,” and that his family was with him.

Virtually everyone in every political circle of the City has stopped to offer thoughts and prayers for Colella this week.

Colella has been receiving intensive treatment for several medical problems for the last several months – missing several Council meetings – but apparently his condition worsened last weekend.

He is the longest-serving elected official in the entire state. He was first elected to public office in the 1950s.

Many consider him the lifeblood and cornerstone of Revere politics.
