Revere’s favorite big top act, Circus Smirkus, is but a few days away and tickets are available but going fast for shows this Friday and Saturday.

Shows will be at 1 and 7 p.m. on both days, July 31 and August 1, under the big top at the Beachmont School, rain or shine. Free parking is available at the school lot.

Recreation Director Adrienne Maguire said this year’s theme for the circus is “Smirkus Ever After: It’s a big top fairy tale”.

“It’s going to be a combination of different fairy tales like Cinderella and others all put together,” she said. “It should appeal to a wide audience.”

Mayor Tom Ambrosino has long said that the circus is probably one of his favorite events of the summer.

“I love the circus and think it’s a great program,” he said. “It’s really one of the highlights of the summer. I would encourage families to attend. It’s really a good take for families.”

The Circus Smirkus has come to Revere for the last several years and it is performed entirely by young people, most of whom eventually go on to professional performing careers in big time circuses.

“There’s a good mix of new performers and returning performers,” said Maguire. “The troupers who come tell us they love coming to Revere, and I think that’s because the families are so welcoming. They stay at the homes of people in the city who are involved in the city…In Revere, we make it special for them. I think that’s really important.”

This year, Maguire said they mounted an aggressive television advertising campaign to target families that may be looking for a local event, but don’t want to spend a fortune.

“We did a lot of TV ads with hopes that we would attract different groups,” she said. “Our ticket sales did pick up. We tried this method of advertising because we expected it to be a tough economy.”

She said the circus is a better value than going into Boston.

“It’s a great opportunity to have this in Revere,” she said. “You can’t go to the Big Apple Circus in Boston for $12 a ticket. To be able to offer great family entertainment in your own backyard with free parking is a big plus, especially in this economy.”

Tickets to the show are $12 for kids, $14 for seniors and $16 for adults, and may be purchased online by visiting www.revererec.com, or by going to the Revere Recreation Department on Beach Street, the Revere City Hall or the Revere Journal offices.
