Six Revere middle school students were recognized for their academic achievements during El Mundo Boston’s Latino Youth Recogntion Day on Friday, June 14th. Moments before the Sox took on the rival New York Yankees, students representing the Garfield Middle School, Rumney Marsh Academy and the Susan B. Anthony Middle School were publicly honored duirng a pre-game ceremony that featured Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu, infielder Vaughn Grissom and Sox bench coach Ramón Vazquez, as well as Revere Mayor Patrick Keefe and Revere School Committee Vice-Chair Jacquline Monterroso. The program, designed to reward achievements in the classroom, is in it’s 29th season and is a collaboration between the Sox and El Mundo Boston – the region’s oldest and most recognized Latino media outlet, which began publishing in 1972 at the Revere Journal printer. The six Revere students honored were: Daniel Segura and Valery Velandia Hurtado from the Garfield Middle School, Angela Giron Granados and Lukas Guerra from Rumney Marsh Academy, and Valeria Ruiz Vega and Carlos Chavez-Pereira from Susan B. Anthony Middle School. The students were selected by their teachers and schools and they each received free tickets to attend the game. Students from East Boston were honored on May 1oth and students from Lawrence were honored on July 10th. Next year will be the program’s 30th anniversary and El Mundo Boston has committed to continue to recognize students from Revere
