RHS Volleyball Remains Undefeated

The Revere High girls volleyball team remained undefeated with three more victories this past week over Greater Boston League (GBL) rivals, all of which were 3-0 shutouts.

The Lacy Patriots, who improved to 15-0 overall on the season , topped Lynn English, 25-15, 25-17,  25-15, last Thursday.

The following day, senior Tassya Dacosta set 20 assists for her teammates and the duo of Ayra Vranic and Gabriela De La Rosa made 10 kills each in a victory over Medford.

This past Monday, the Lady Patriots vanquished the Lady Red Devils of Chelsea, one of the top teams in the GBL, by scores of 25-11, 25-19, and 25-7.

Coach Lianne Mimmo and her crew, who stand alone atop the GBL with a 12-0 mark, will seek to clinch the 2022 league title with a match at Malden today (Wednesday). Revere defeated the Lady Golden Tornadoes (who lost to Chelsea this past Friday and who are in second place in the GBL with an 8-2 record) in their first meeting three weeks ago.

Revere will travel to Everett on Friday to complete their GBL schedule and will return home to host non-league rival Archbishop Williams on Monday.

RHS Girls Soccer Improves to 6-4-2

The Revere High girls soccer team won three of its five contests during a busy 10-day stretch to improve to 6-4-2 on the season.

The Lady Patriots faced off against a well-coached and disciplined Medford team on Thursday, September 29, and came up short, 1-0.

“We dominated the whole game and outplayed Medford, but we couldn’t find the net,” said RHS head coach Megan O’Donnell.

The Lady Mustangs scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal late in the first half, and though Revere outshot Medford the rest of the way, the Lady Patriots were unable to deliver the ball into the back of the Lady Mustang net.

“Our defense, led by Ari Pina and Giselle Salvador, has really come together this year to be a lockdown defense,” noted O’Donnell. “Our offense, led by Nahomy Galvez, Nataly Olivia, Erika Mejia, and Sandra Torres has been playing so well together this season and it will only get better.”

However, the Lady Patriots shook off the tough defeat and bounced back with a 1-0 win over league rival Somerville, which was another strong battle against a tough team.

The Lady Patriots scored late into the first half when a ball was played deep to the corner of the box. Nataly Olivia and Erika Mejia both touched the ball before it hit a Somerville defender in the back and Samarah Paiva was in the right spot at the right time to kick the deflected ball past the Lady Highlander keeper.

“Our midfield, led by Erika Mejia, Sandra Torres, Catalina Chizavo and Kyra Delaney, made some big plays in the middle by knocking Somerville off the ball and causing many turnovers,” said O’Donnell. “Our defense, led by Ari Pina, Samarah Paiva, Fatima Olivia, and Giselle Salavdor, played Somerville very tough and denied them shots on goal.

“Our keeper, Nisrin Sekkat,  made multiple saves down the stretch to get us the win and record another career shutout victory,” O’Donnell added.

Last Wednesday the Lady Patriots made it two in a row over a Greater Boston League opponent with a 3-0 blanking of Malden.

Sandra Torres scored her first varsity goal midway through the first half with an assist from Nahomy Galvez and Kaylin Olivia.

Revere made it 2-0 when Olivia reached the back of the Lady Tornado net with an assist from Samarah Paiva, who sent a great ball up the middle to Kaylin, who beat two defenders and then the Malden keeper.

“This was Kaylin’s first career goal,” noted O’Donnell.

Erika Mejia, with an assist from Nahomy Galvez, added an extra insurance marker for the 3-0 finale.

Sekkatt collected her second shutout of the season.

“We had great play by everyone who got into the game that day,” said O’Donnelll. “Again, our midfield and defense played lights out.”

Revere traveled to Lynn Classical the next day and dropped a 3-0 decision to the Lady Rams.

“Classical is a tough team,” said O’Donnell. “They outplayed us Thursday night, but Nisrin Sekkat made a huge save on a penalty kick in the first three minutes into the game and set the tone early.  Classical scored all three goals in the first half and we shut them out in the second half, but we couldn’t find the net.”

O’Donnell and her crew then played their third game in three days —and fourth in five days — when they took on non-league opponent Boston International on Friday and earned a 5-0 victory.

Revere grabbed the lead late in the first half with goals from Erika Mejia (assisted by Sandra Torres) and Ari Pina, assisted by Mejia.

On the latter goal, the duo of Ari and Erika worked a nice give-and-go when Pina brought the ball up the field from the back and passed it to Mejia, who gave it back to Ari for the score.

The Lady Patriots came out flying after the intermission, with goals from Sandra Torres (assisted by Eldaa Samuel and Fatima Oliva), Catalina Chizavo (from Fatima Oliva), and Nisrin Sekkat, with an assist from Ryesha Mezan.

“Myka Charles got her first career start on defense and played really well with Fatima Oliva, Ari Pina, and Giselle Salavador,” said O’Donnell. “Our midfield was Erika Mejia, Sandra Torres, Catalina Chizavo, and Jessica Nova, and our strikers were Kaylin Oliva and Eldaa Samuel.”

The contest afforded O’Donnell the opportunity to give her full team some playing valuable time.

“Amina Chitaoui, Kimberly Doblado, Tiffany Hoang, Ryesha Mezan. Kathy Granados, Jennifer Martinez, and Grace Ramirez all got into the game and played great,” noted O’Donnell. “They have been working hard all season and it showed in the second half of the game.”

The Lady Patriots, who need two wins (or four ties) in their final six games in order to punch a ticket for a journey to the post-season tourney, were scheduled to travel to Lynn English yesterday (Tuesday) and will host Everett tomorrow (Thursday).

They will entertain non-league foe O’Bryant High next Monday evening, October 17, in a contest that will be highlighted by Senior Night festivities at 6:00 at Harry Della Russo Stadium, and Chelsea next Tuesday.

RHS Girls Race Past Everett

The Revere High girls cross country team raced to a 15-50 victory over Greater Boston League rival Everett last week on the Lady Patriots’ home course.

“It was great racing by the whole team,” said RHS head coach Katie Sinnott. “The support and consistent improvement amongst the team is pushing us to get better each day.

“Sophomore Daniela Santana Baez and freshman Stephanie Reyes each had amazing races, both running their fastest race pace to date, as well as beating their previous home course time by over a minute,” Sinnott added.

“Juniors Rocio Gonzalez Castillo and Yasmin Riazi also bettered their home course race times. Olivia Rupp continues to be dominant, taking first place for the third consecutive race,” Sinnott continued. “Our next two meets are also at home, which is where we can really show our full-season improvements.”

Sinnott and her crew were scheduled to host GBL rival Malden today (Wednesday) and will entertain Somerville next Wednesday.

“Both opponents will be challenging races, so we know there is work to do,” noted Sinnott.

The individual results for the Revere girls were as follows:

Olivia Rupp – 1st – 22:45

Rocio Gonzalez Castillo – 2nd – 23:01

Yasmin Riazi – 4th – 24:56

Salma El Andalosy – 5th – 26:27

Luca Shanley, running in his third varsity meet, ran a strong race, finishing with a time of 28:04.

RHS Golfers Play Well vs. GBL Rivals

Although the Revere/Malden co-op golf team came up on the short end of its recent matches with Greater Boston League rivals Lynn English and Lynn Classical at the Gannon golf course, a number of the Patriot Tornadoes turned in fine performances.

In a closely-fought battle with Lynn English, in which the Bulldogs edged Revere/Malden by a score of 39-33, the top performers for the Patriot Tornadoes were Ollie Svendsen, playing at #6, who won his match, 6-3, and Chris MacDonald, playing at #7, who defeated his Bulldog counterpart 5.5-3.5.

Frankie Annunziata at #3, Saul Kruckenberg at #4, and Dante Federico at #8 all halved their matches with their English rivals.

In the match with Classical, which was captured by the Rams by a score of 47-25, Annunziata won big at #3 by a score of 7-2.

Federico at #8 was a 6-3 winner and MacDonald, playing at #7, won his match,5-4.
