Marguerite Rizzo

Longtime Metropolitan Life Insurance Office Manager, Graduate of RHS, Class of 1944

A Funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Anthony of Padua Church on March 29 for Marguerite L. Rizzo, who passed away unexpectedly following a brief illness on Wednesday, March 23 at the Tufts Medical Center in Boston. She was 95 years old. Services concluded with interment in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.

Marguerite was born in Chelsea and raised and educated in Revere. She was a graduate of Revere High School, Class of 1944.       

Early on, Marguerite and her family resided in the Beachmont Section of Revere and later moved to the Point of Pines. Marguerite worked at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company as an Office Manager for more than 30 years, retiring in 1988.

Marguerite kept herself busy by being active in many groups and enjoying various activities. She was, first and foremost, an avid communicant at St. John of Vianney Parish in the Point of Pines and, following its closing, she became active at St. Anthony of Padua Church. She was involved in Bingo as well as the Food Pantry. She was also an active member at the Revere Seniors.

Her time at St. Anthony’s was very special to her because of her deep religious roots.

Marguerite was an avid bowler, bocci player and golfer. She would frequent Cedar Glen in Saugus.  Marguerite was also a Boston Sports fan.

She never had any children of her own but loved her nieces and nephews unconditionally.

She was the beloved daughter of the late Carl and Florence (McWilliams) Rizzo, dear and loving sister of the late Robert Rizzo, Carl Rizzo, Dr. Sabino Rizzo and Joan Anderson; cherished aunt of Robert W. Anderson and his wife, Lisa A. of Lynn and many other nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Joseph Travalini

Retired High School English Teacher

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Graveside Service today, Wednesday, March 30 at 1:30 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery, 302 Elm St., Everett for Joseph D. Travalini, 79, who

died on Thursday, March 24 at the Brigham & Women’s Faulkner Hospital in Boston  following a long illness with Parkinson’s Disease. Please arrive at the Cemetery at 1:15 pm.

Joe was a native of Everett where he was raised and a graduate of Everett High School, Class of 1960.   

He pursued his passion and earned a bachelor’s degree in education at Salem State University. Later Joe earned an MBA in education at Arizona State University, where he began his teaching career. Joe had to leave his teaching position due to being drafted in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He proudly served his country and was honorably discharged. Joe returned home, in 1970. 

He took a position at the Waltham Public School Department as an English Teacher. Joe would spend the next 35 years as a High School English Teacher. He took great pride educating young students to help them learn about the English Language, American Classics, Literature and getting the most out of his students by making learning fun.

He lived a very humble and quiet life in Boston. He was always reading and loved to continue to learn about new things.

In Joe’s younger days, he belonged to a band called “The Shore Tunes.” He played the accordion, piano and also sang. It was well known throughout Joe’s family, that whatever the holiday or celebration, Joe was going to perform. He loved doing it and so did all his friends and family.

The devoted son of the late Alfred J. Travalini and Josephine (Martucci) Travalini, he was the dear brother of Robert P. Travalini and his  partner Benjamin A. Nunez of Boston and Ogunquit, ME., John J. Travalini and his wife, Virginia “Ginny” of Orlando, FL and the late Geraldine Oswald and the cherished companion of the late Thomas Threlkeld for over 40 years. He is also lovingly survived by his sister-in-law Kay Travalini of Peabody and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Wilma Short

February 10, 1938 ~ March 26, 2022 

Wilma M. (Lantz) Short, 84, of Winthrop, formerly of Everett, passed away on March 26.

The beloved mother of David and his wife, Patty Short, Lynne (Short) and her husband, Ramon Alveres, Gary and his wife, Susan Short and Kevin and his wife, Sheila Short, she was the loving grandmother of 12, great grandmother of nine and great great grandmother of three. Wilma is also survived by her sister, Audrey Berardino of Everett, Roy Lantz of Sun City, CA, nieces, nephews and good friends.  

Funeral from the Salvatore Rocco & Sons Funeral Home, 331 Main Street, Everett on Friday, April 1 at 9:30 a.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Immaculate Conception Church, 133 Beach St., Revere at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Maria LaValle

Insurance Broker/Agent and Graduate of RHS, Class of 1969

A Funeral Mass was celebrated on March 28 in St. Anthony of Padua Church for Maria K. (Amato) LaValle, 70, who died on Wednesday, March 24 in the loving presence and tender care of her husband, Joseph at their residence in Revere following a long illness. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.

Maria was a proud lifelong resident of Revere. She was a graduate of Revere High School, Class of 1969 and she spent her entire professional career as an Insurance Broker for various agencies and companies. She worked for many years at Louis Hoffman Insurance Co. in Boston, later at Revere Auto Insurance and lastly, at Rizzo Insurance Agency in Revere, retiring in 1998.

Maria’s pride and joy was her family, especially her son and grandson. She was happiest spending time with them or alongside her husband at the Point of Pines Yacht Club in Revere on their boat.

Maria had been battling various forms of cancer for many years, yet her attitude, courage and determination never wavered. She took each day as it came and fought through all the battles.

Her small frame and soft smile didn’t match the enormity of her spirit; she truly was an inspiration. She will be forever missed by all who loved her, especially her family and her dear friends.

The devoted daughter of Vincenza (Mercurio) Amato and the late Carmelo “Mel” Amato of Revere, she was the beloved wife of 49 years to Joseph A. LaValle of Point of Pines, Revere; the loving mother of Joseph M. LaValle and his wife, Kelly of Plainville; the cherished grandmother of Samuel A. LaValle of Plainville and the dear sister of Vincent P. Amato of Florida. She is lovingly survived by her sister-in-law Lisa M. Tata – Amato of Revere.   

She was the treasured niece of Marie G. Tully and her late husband, Robert E. Tully of Winthrop, the loving aunt of Michael V. Amato and his wife, Sarah of Georgetown, Matthew P. Amato and his wife, Laura of New Jersey, John Presto of Connecticut, Lauren Repucci of Malden, Lisa Joyner and her husband, Norwood of Leominster, the late Lydia Repucci and the late Anthony Presto;  the loving grand aunt of Vincenzo, Fiametta, Giannina and Carmelo Amato.

Robert “Frank” Case

Long Time Verizon Employee

Robert “Frank” Case of Revere passed away on March 25 surrounded by his family at the age of 89.

Frank worked for Verizon for many years and resided in Revere and Boca Raton, Florida. Frank enjoyed many things in life, such as getting together with friends, traveling, and spending weekends at Gulf Stream in Florida and at Saratoga in New York. Frank lived life to the fullest, and his memory will be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to have known him

Born in Everett on January 4, 1933 to the late Francis and Frances (Sexton) Case, he leaves behind his longtime companion of 35 years, Charlotte Bianco of Revere and her children, Michele Bianco of Revere and Joseph Bianco and his wife, Leslie of Saugus. He was the dear cousin of Gertrude Burk of Pocasset and Anita Carroll-Weldon of New Hampshire.

Frank worked for Verizon for many years and resided in Revere and Boca Raton, Florida. Frank enjoyed many things in life, such as getting together with friends, traveling and spending weekends at Gulf Stream in Florida and at Saratoga in New York. Frank lived life to the fullest, and his memory will be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Giuseppe Amari

Of Revere

Giuseppe Amari of Revere passed away on March 22. 

The devoted husband of Maria “Marie” (DiMaria), he was the loving father of John V. Amari, cherished grandfather of Jill and Lilly Amari and is also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. 

Family and friends honored Giuseppe’s life by gathering at the Ruggiero Family Memorial Home, 971 Saratoga Street. Orient Heights East Boston on Sunday, March 27 and again on Monday morning, March 28 before leaving in funeral procession to the Immaculate Conception Church, 133 Beach St., Revere for an 11 a.m. Funeral Mass. Services concluded with Giuseppe being laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett.

Concetta “Tina” Mazzola

Co-Owned Revere Ambulance Service

Concetta “Tina”  (DeMattia) Mazzola, 97, of Newburyport, formerly of Revere, passed peacefully, Monday morning, March 21 at Anna Jaques Hospital with her family at her side.  She was the beloved wife for 80 years of the late Rev. Salvatore Mazzola, Sr.

Born in Everett, June 14, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Lena (Miraglia) DeMattia.

Tina, as she was known by many, was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, loving sister and aunt, and great friend to many.  She worked and co-owned with her husband the Revere Ambulance Service.

Tina enjoyed wintering in Florida, where she leaves behind many friends. Her life was focused on her family, and she especially loved spending time with her three generations of grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  She was also a longtime member of the Newburyport Pentecostal Assembly.

Precious memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved her: her three sons: Philip Mazzola and his wife, Grace of Wakefield, NH, Richard Mazzola and his wife, Robin of Mt. Vernon, OH and Jay Mazzola and his wife, Terre of Alton, NH, along with three generations of grandchildren, several generations of nieces and nephews, extended family and dear friends. She was predeceased by her sister, Mary DeMattia and brothers, Leo DeMattia and Michael DeMattia, Jr.

Funeral arrangements were by the Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport.  Funeral Services were held March 25 at the Newburyport Pentecostal Assembly.  Donations in memory of Concetta Mazzola can be made to the Newburyport Pentecostal Assembly, 13 Hale Street, Newburyport, MA  01950.

Ethel McDonald

Formerly of Revere

Ethel M. (Duffy) McDonald 83, beloved wife of James L. McDonald, died Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at the Twin Oaks Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Danvers.

Born in Everett, she was the daughter of the late George and Edna (Rhinestein) Duffy. She was raised in the Point of Pines area of Revere and graduated from Revere High School. She continued her education at Salem State College, graduating Magna Cum Laude of her class.

Mrs. McDonald had been employed as a school teacher for many years, having taught in Somerville, MA, Michigan and Germany.

A resident of Peabody for over fifty years prior to moving to Danvers, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who will be missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Jeanine M. McDonald of Rockport, a son, Michael J. McDonald of Maine, four grandchildren, Emilee, Tyler, Jessica and Michael, two great grandchildren, four sisters, Edna Epsimos of Revere, Rosemary Duffy Donlin of Lynn, Patricia Gaffey of Medford and Lucille Duffy of CA, a brother, Charlie Duffy of NY and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late George Duffy.

Her funeral service will be held at the Conway Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, Thursday, March 31, 2022 at 9 a.m. Visiting hours are Wednesday, March 30, 5-7 p.m. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
