RHS football team hosts Classical Friday

The Revere High football team will be seeking its first victory of the season when Coach Lou Cicatelli and his Patriots host Lynn Classical Friday evening at Harry Della Russo Stadium. Kick-off time is set for the usual 7:00 p.m.

Revere played at Masconomet, traditionally one of the top teams in the area, this past Friday and came out on the short end of a 42-14 decision.

The contest started well for the Patriots, who took the opening kickoff and marched 60 yards to paydirt. Senior captain Victor Rivera, who enjoyed a banner night, rushing for 130 yards and scoring all of his team’s points, scampered the final 30 yards to give the Patriots a quick 6-0 lead.

Masconomet responded on the ensuing kickoff with a long drive of its own that would prove to be a harbinger of the frustrations that Revere would endure all night.

“We had them on third-and-long on many occasions,” said Cicatelli, “but we were unable to stop them. We let them make big plays throughout the night and that proved to be the difference.”

After Masco forged ahead 7-6, Revere came right back with another long drive that brought the Patriots as close as the Masco three. However, the Pats were unable to seal the deal, turning the ball over to the Chieftains on downs.

The Revere defense appeared primed to return the ball to their offense, but on a third-and-eight, Masco converted a short pass play into an 85 yard touchdown and a 14-6 lead.

Masco also took advantage of turnovers by the Revere offense, including a fumble, an interception, and a muffed punt, en route to building a 28-6 lead at the half and the eventual 42-14 final outcome.

Rivera capped a Revere drive in the second half with a 15 yard sprint into the end zone and then rushed for the two-point conversion. RHS quarterback Eddie Sullivan converted on 11-of-20 passes on the night, with senior John DeSimone  his top target. Masco double-teamed senior captain Oscar Lopez, who had scored four touchdowns the previous week, all night, no doubt after  watching Oscar’s exploits on film.

“We have a young team in many areas and we need to continue to work hard and improve,” said Cicatelli, who had praise for the defensive performances of two-way senior lineman and captain Anthony DeStefano, two-way sophomore lineman Frank Simms, and junior linebacker Anthony Scoppetullo. “We have an opportunity to turn our season around Friday night against Classical and we need to make the most of it.”

Despite a fine performance by the RHS defense, the Patriot offense showed few signs of life in a 14-0 loss to Wakefield in the season-opener under the lights at Harry Della Russo Stadium. Patriot tailback Clark Jones rushed for 59 yards on 16 carries, but coach Jon Miller’s squad managed less than 100 yards of total offense. Revere High Faculty Manager Charles P. Doherty has informed the School Committee that the Winthrop schools have decided to sever all athletic ties with Revere after this year’s Thanksgiving Day football game in the wake of the brawl that ensued at the end of last year’s game, a 20-12 upset victory by Winthrop over a heavily-favored Revere squad, in which a Winthrop boy was hospitalized with  concussion and other Winthrop players were injured after being assaulted and kicked by Revere players. This will mark the second time that the schools have ended relations in their rivalry, which dates back to 1913, the first time occurring after the 1926 game in which there also was a brawl at the end of the game among players and fans.
