RHS football team defeats Salem, 28-6; 6-1 Patriots meet Danvers in playoffs
The Revere High football team wrote itself into the annals of Patriot grid history Friday evening at Bertram Field in Salem, defeating the Witches, 28-6, to improve their record to 6-1, the first time that an RHS football team has opened its season with a 6-1 mark since 1982.
“I can’t describe how proud I am of this team,” said RHS head coach Lou Cicarelli, who was a member of that 1982 Patriot gridiron squad 33 years ago. “They’re a talented group, but they also play hard and work hard. They give 110 percent on the field for the entire game.”
The victory catapults Cicarelli and his crew into the Division 3 Northeast playoffs. Revere now will face Danvers in the first round of the playoff format Friday evening at Essex Tech at 7:00.
The Patriots are seeded sixth, despite their 6-1 record, while Danvers is the third seed at 5-2. The seedings are based on a power ranking that only a computer can figure out.
Marblehead (6-1) is the top seed in the D-3 Northeast, followed by Tewksbury, Danvers, Gloucester, Beverly, Revere, Salem, and Winchester.
For the third straight week, the Patriots yielded the opening score against their opponent (though not on the opening possession) when Salem capitalized on a Revere turnover (a fumble) inside the Patriot 20 to take a 6-0 lead. Given that Friday evening was the start of Halloween week in Salem, it was an eerie beginning for the Patriots. However, as also was the case with Revere’s previous opponents, that would prove to be the lone foray by Salem into the Patriot endzone, as Revere shook off any of the Witches’ hexes and soon asserted their dominance on both sides of the ball.
Revere took the ensuing kickoff and marched 70 yards, capped by a five yard scoring run by RHS senior quarterback and captain Dan Murphy. The successful PAT kick by Steve Noel (one of his four on the night) pushed Revere into a 7-6 lead that they never would relinquish.
From that point on, the Patriots assumed full control of the contest. Revere moved out to a 14-6 advantage before the half ended (1:19 was left on the clock) on a 50 yard TD pass from Murphy to Noel.
With Revere having deferred taking the opening kickoff (a la the Belichickian Patriots), they took the opening kickoff after the intermission and marched into the endzone, with the fleet Murphy scooting 50 yards on a quarterback draw.
A 60 yard drive, topped by a three-yard run by Noel, completed the scoring in the fourth period. Although Noel (16 points on the night) and Murphy accounted for the four Revere TD’s (with Danny also tossing for a score), the Patriots received substantial offensive contributions from many players, most notably Frank Antrim and Victor Rivera.
The lone negative aspect for the Patriots was the departure of two-way lineman (and starting center) Anthony DeStefano, who hobbled off the field with an apparent knee injury, the extent of which will be known later this week.
A good crowd of Patriot fans made the trek to Salem and a big following of the Pats’ faithful likewise is expected to go to Essex Tech this Friday. A fan bus is expected to be available to those who would like to do so.
Girls soccer plays well in 2-1 loss to LC
The Revere High girls soccer team turned in what coach Megan O’Donnell termed “our best game of the season†last Wednesday in a 2-1 contest with Lynn Classical.
Classical drew first blood with a goal off a corner kick, but the Lady Patriots responded immediately to bring Revere back to level before the end of the first half.
Lady Patriot fullback Joseline Argueta hustled to the ball on the sideline, beating a Classical opponent to the ball and kicking it upfield to forward Gabby Melendez. Gabby then outraced a Classical defender one-on-one toward the net with the ball, delivering a powerful strike from the top of the box that beat the Lynn keeper.
The contest turned into a defensive duel after the intermission, but Classical broke the stalemate with about nine minutes to go to claim the victory. The Lady Patriots stepped up their offensive attack and had opportunities to achieve a deadlock, but could not reach the back of the Classical net.
“Every girl worked hard, from the bench to everyone who got in the game,†said O’Donnell. “As a coach I am proud of all the hard work and progress that the team has made this season. We have overcome a lot of injuries, but the girls proved to everyone in our league that hard work pays off.â€
The Lady Patriots were set to take on Lynn English Monday at the Manning Bowl and will close out the 2015 campaign Wednesday evening at Peabody.
RHS field hockey team deadlocks Malden, 1-1
The Revere High field hockey team battled to a 1-1 tie with former Greater Boston League rival Malden this past week.
Adanna Hector notched the goal for the Lady Patriots with an assist from Wafae El Arar.
Coach Erin Parker and her squad will end their season this evening (Wednesday) with a contest against Gloucester that will be highlighted by traditional Senior Night festivities at which the three Lady Patriot seniors, Hector, Julia Freni, and Joanna Pineda, will be honored for their contributions to the RHS field hockey program.
RHS girls              cross-country team hosts home meet
With the colder weather bringing a conclusion to the threat of West Nile virus from Suffolk County’s mosquitoes, the Revere High girls cross-country team finally got a chance to run a race on its home course at Belle Isle last week in the last dual meet of the 2015 season.
Although the Lady Patriots came out on the short end of a 17-44 decision, RHS head coach Katie Sinnott was pleased with her team’s performance against a Peabody squad that traditionally is one of the strongest programs in the Northeastern Conference.
“For our seniors, this was their last chance to race on our flat and fast course,†noted Sinnott, whose underclassmen on the team put together a Senior Night for their departing teammates which also served as a celebration of the Lady Patriots’ season.
“Although we lost to Peabody, there were many personal triumphs,” noted Sinnott. Hannah Fitzpatrick ran a personal record (PR)Â pace of 6:49 per mile and came within 20 seconds of setting a new Revere High course record.
“As Hannah matures as a racer, she is really getting a feel for how to attack a race and maintain a strong position within the race,” said Sinnott.
In addition, seven other Lady Patriots set new home-best race times, an accomplishment at any speed. Establishing PRs for the Belle Isle course were seniors Trisha Cheever, Leslie Constancia, Suellen Guerreiro, and Jessica Ventura and juniors Monica Posada, Joanna Severino Perez, and Lani Stevens.
There also were several PR race paces: seniors Sabrina Elouardi, Jasmine Martinez, Angelina Nguyen, Justyne Pennachio, and Cindy Peraza; junior Helen Perez; sophomore Hawa Barry; and freshman Leila Cesic.
Sinnott and her crew now move into the invitational portion of the season. They will compete this Saturday in the NEC League Meet at Bradley Palmer State Park and then head to Wrentham on both November 7th and 14th, competing in the State Coach’s Invitational and the Eastern Massachusetts Divisional Race.

The RHS football team defeated Beverly, 7-6, in a physical battle Saturday afternoon at Hurd Stadium. Senior running back Emilio Digitale, who stands at 6-1 and weighs 200 pounds, rushed for 223 yards on 26 carries. RHS quarterback Reggie Royster scored the Revere TD on a one-yard plunge and Steven Ennamorati kicked the point after to overcome  6-0 Beverly lead. RHS head coach Lou Cicatelli praised the defensive play of David Cutler, Dennis Hickey, and Steven Ferrante.
The RHS girls soccer team defeated Lynn English, 3-1. Christina Polsonetti, Alex DeMattia, and Kendall Zullo scored the goals for coach Steve MacDonald’s squad.
The RHS boys soccer team defeated Winthrop, 4-2. Juan Panameno, Ricardo Cegarra, Juan Nino, and Johnny Lanza scored the goals for coach Cesar Salazar’s squad.
Stephanie Bruno scored the lone goal for the RHS field hockey team in a 2-1 loss to Danvers. Despite the loss, RHS head coach Jennifer Wells was pleased with her team’s performance.
Mario Herrera was the top Revere runner, coming across in fourth place in a tri-meet with Lynn English and Beverly in which the Patriots defeated English, but fell to Beverly. The RHS girls did likewise, with Ariana Coniglio coming in as the top Lady Patriot in fourth place.
The RHS volleyball team defeated Arlington, 3-1, led by the play of Peniel Muteba, Ta Hou, and Nayara DaSilva.

Coach Steve MacDonald’s RHS girls soccer team kept its hopes alive for a state tourney berth with an 8-0 win over Somerville. Leanne Zolla scored two goals for Revere.
The RHS boys cross country team split its tri-meet recently, defeating Arlington, but falling to Somerville. Rong Samrit was the top Patriot runner, followed by Fred O’Connor, Nick Sevastakis, Kris Van Herp, and Mike Pepe. The Patriots’ top runner, Samnang Ros, sprained his ankle during the race.

An interception return for a touchdown by Patriot John Spinelli was called back and nullified by a controversial roughing-the-passer call (the ref waited to throw his flag until Spinelli was halfway to the end zone), allowing the Peabody High football team to escape with a 14-12 triumph over Revere. The two Patriot touchdowns were scored by Spinelli on a three yard pass from quarterback Joe Galvin and by Fred Cinelli, who recovered a blocked punt in the Peabody end zone.
A 23-32 win by the RHS girls cross country team over Arlington raised the Lady Patriots’ record to 5-1, the most victories ever-recorded by an RHS girls cross country squad. Stacey Chamberlin led the way over the three-mile course in 21:51. Kim Bulwer was next in 23:46, followed by Michelle MacDonald in 23:50, Stephanie Annese in 23:57, and Sonja Hoover in 25:12.

The RHS football team dropped a 21-12 decision to Malden. Joe Coppola scored a TD on a two-yard dive and John Festa went in from three yards out for the Patriot touchdowns.
Victor’s captured both the regular-season and playoff titles of the Revere Women’s Softball League.

The Revere High football team battled New Bedford to a 6-6 tie in a contest between unbeaten teams before 4000 fans Saturday at Paul Revere Stadium. Tony Dilisio scored the Revere TD on a one-yard plunge.

The Revere High football team earned its first win of the season with a 14-6 upset victory over Watertown. RHS captains Jerry Palumbo and Paul McCarthy turned in terrific games on defense. Gaff and DePasquale scored the Revere touchdowns.
The undefeated Immaculate Conception High football team continued to roll along its merry way with a 26-0 win over St. Patrick’s of Watertown. Henry Hooten threw a TD pass to O’Donnell; DiCarlo ran five yards for a touchdown; and White and Ferragamo rushed for the other two scores.
