Last Wednesday afternoon, Mayor Dan Rizzo held a pizza party and recognition ceremony for the Revere High School Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) members that participated in the Snow Angel Program.
We would like to join the Mayor in extending our appreciation to this group of RHS students that provide a crucial service for the elderly and the disabled – a service that did not exist prior to the formation of the JROTC.
The Snow Angel Program is a centerpiece of the service mission of the JROTC. Each year scores of JROTC students go through the community clearing snow from sidewalks, driveways, and paths for people in need. This past winter their service was frequently the deciding factor for whether or not some seniors were able to get badly needed heating oil deliveries. In fact, one Cary Avenue resident testified in this newspaper that without the Snow Angels, she would have been without heat for weeks, having not been able to shovel a path for the oil delivery person.
For many years prior to the Snow Angel Program, Revere seniors and disabled residents had nowhere to turn for assistance when snow walloped the city. That has all changed now and the energy and enthusiasm of these young people from Revere has gone to filling a much-needed void.
The JROTC Program in whole has been an asset to Revere.
