Palermo fans 13, softball team wins opener, 3-1
“Good things come to those who wait,†the good nuns of the Sisters of St. Joseph always told us, and for the Revere High softball team, the delay in the start of their 2015 season proved well worth the wait as the Lady Patriots knocked off perennial Northeastern Conference power Lynn Classical, 3-1, Monday afternoon at Lynn’s Breed Middle School field.
Senior captain Sabrina Palermo picked up where she left off last season, in which she led the Lady Patriots to the NEC North Division crown and the MIAA Division 1 North Sectional title, mowing down the Lady Ram lineup to the tune of 13 strikeouts. The lone Classical tally came in the second inning via the “small ball†route, with bunts and contact grounders producing the Lady Ram marker.
However, with Sabrina getting stronger as the game progressed, even making contact proved difficult for the Classical hitters.
The Revere offense was fairly quiet, but delivered enough punch when needed. Junior Ally Hinojosa earned the distinction of scoring the first run of the 2015 campaign in the opening inning when she reached first on a dropped third strike and made it to second on a throwing error by the Classical catcher. A base hit by junior Julianna Cecere then brought Ally across the plate.
The Lady Patriots broke the 1-1 deadlock in the sixth frame with a pair of markers. Hinojosa once again got Revere going with a base hit and subsequently sprinted home on a triple by senior captain Kristina Stella. Another RBI base hit by Cecere rescued Kristina to provide an insurance run.
Although Palermo’s 13 Ks accounted for the majority of Classical’s 21 outs on the day, the Revere defense behind her was solid when called upon, with junior left fielder Cheyenne Fullen, who is new to the team this season, making two fine running catches. Hinojosa at third base and senior captain Victoria Russo at second also turned in some nice defensive efforts.
“It was a great way to start the season, because Classical always is one of the top teams in the NEC,†said RHS head coach Joe Cicarello, for whom the victory at Breed’s was the first for his team in the six seasons he has been at the helm of the Lady Patriot softball program. “This basically was the first game we had played outside this spring, so it was especially nice to beat Classical at their place.â€
Cicarello and his crew were set to host Lynn English today (Wednesday) at the St. Mary’s field and will entertain Peabody Monday morning on the holidayat 10:00.
RHS softball team to host clinics for young players
The members of the Revere High softball team will host a pair of clinics during the holiday week for girls ages nine and up during the vacation week. The clinics are set for Monday and Wednesday from 12:30-2:30 at the St. Mary’s Field. Monday’s clinic will take place immediately after the Revere vs. Peabody game that day that begins at 10:00. All proceeds from the clinics will benefit the RHS softball program.
Patriot baseball team wins season opener
The Revere High baseball team won its delayed season-opener last Wednesday, defeating former Greater Boston League rival Everett, 3-1, at Conigliaro Field.
RHS senior captain Noah Jaymes served notice to Revere’s rivals that he will be one of the top pitchers in the area this season with a route-going effort in which he limited a veteran Everett lineup to just five hits on the day, outdueling Everett’s senior ace, Lawrence Falter, who was the GBL co-MVP last season.
The Patriots scored all three of their runs in the fifth inning to give Jaymes all the support he would need and the senior righthander took it from there.
The Patriots are scheduled to play at Lynn English today (Wednesday). The will travel to Peabody Monday and to Gloucester Wednesday for encounters set for 10:00 in the morning during the vacation week.
RHS boys lacrosse defeats Classical, 7-3
The Revere High boys lacrosse team posted its first win of the season with a 7-3 triumph over Lynn Monday. Ed Sullivan (three goals), Dan Redding, Rich Damiano, Dan Muller, and Steve Noel provided the offensive firepower for the Patriots. Patriot goalie David Sinatra made 12 saves to shut down Classical’s attack.
“Our defense was solid again,†said RHS head coach Steve Magno. “Two of our new players, Benit Sejdiu and Vito Grillo, played well and continue to develop. We are very young and inexperienced, but we play hard and we hustle. Our skills are developing with every practice and game. We just need guys to play and watch more lacrosse. I’m proud of this team for hanging in there and for supporting each other. We still have lots to work on.â€
Magno and his crew, who now stand at 1-3 on the season, play at Winthrop tomorrow (Thursday) and will trek to Essex Tech Tuesday.
Boys tennis team
defeats Medford
The Revere High boys tennis team defeated Medford, 4-1, in its first complete-match of the season Monday afternoon at the Gibson Park tennis courts. Winners for the Patriots were sophomore Mateo Lopez at second singles, 6-4, 7-5; junior David Henao at third singles, 6-4, 6-4; the first doubles duo of sophomore David Grujic and senior captain Danton Duque, 6-4, 6-1; and the second doubles tandem of sophomores Naveed Jabbar and Josh Preciado, 6-2, 6-3.
Senior captain Ryan Tran, playing at the number one singles slot, came out on the short end of his match, 6-1, 6-1.
“The team played well,†said RHS head coach Mike Flynn. “We’ve had an excellent turnout this year (approximately 20 boys) and have a predominantly young team that only can get better.â€
The Patriots opened their season last Wednesday at Salem, but the contest was halted because of bad weather with Revere leading, 2-1. Lopez at second singles earned what Flynn termed “a superb victory†with a come-from-behind performance, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4. The first doubles team of Grujic and Duc also were winners in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, and 7-5. Although Tran dropped his match at first singles, the second doubles duo of Jabbar and Preciado were leading their match, 7-6, 4-6, 3-0, when play was halted. Henao at third singles also was engaged in a close encounter, 6-7 (5-7) when conditions worsened.
The teams will complete the match when they meet again later in the season.
The Patriots travel to Lynn English today (Wednesday) and to Gloucester Thursday. They will play at Peabody next Thursday.
Young girls lax
team drops openers
Although the Revere High girls lacrosse team came out on the short end of its first two contests this season, 16-6 to Winthrop and 15-3 to Gloucester, first year RHS head coach Karen Atkinson saw many positive aspects in her team’s performances.
“There were plenty of bright spots throughout the Winthrop game, but we need to capitalize on them in the future,†said Atkinson. “I was really impressed with the way we played during the first half against Gloucester. We held Gloucester to only eight goals in the first half, playing team defense, and we had minor breakdowns which allowed them to score. But we took ourselves out of the game during the second half, and allowed Gloucester to increase its lead from 8-3 to 15-3.â€
Senior captain Rachel DeSantis netted three goals in the Winthrop contest. Senior captains Leangcheng Chrea and Olivia Venezia tallied a goal apiece, as did junior midfielder Amina Mansouri against the Lady Vikings.
In addition to Revere’s solid team defensive effort in the first half of the Gloucester encounter, other highlights in the battle with the Lady Fishermen included the two-goal performance by Chrea and the first career goal by freshman Danela Ortiz-Bonilla.
“Danela does a great job of using both hands during practice and it shows in her game play,†noted Atkinson, who also lauded the play of another freshman, goalie Shateya Travis.
“Shateya has stepped up to play in goal for us. She has done a fantastic job learning the game and continues to make unbelievable saves in our games,†said Atkinson of Travis’s 16 stops against Gloucester and 20 saves against Winthrop.
The coach also praised the play of junior midfielder Basma Mered in the Gloucester contest. “Basra stepped up during the game and ran through the ball, coming up with some key plays,†said Atkinson. “One of our main issues is not running hard through the ground ball to pick it up. As a team we tend to be passive, but Basma played great on Friday, especially in this aspect.â€
Another Lady Patriot whom Atkinson singled out for her fine work thus far is freshman midfielder Marina Robinson. “Marina has done a great job stepping up and playing center,†said the coach. “Her draws are getting better each game and her stick work continues to improve.
Atkinson also mentioned senior captain Ayah Omar. “Ayah has been doing a great job as a leader on and off the field. She works hard, is always encouraging everyone. She showed exceptional leadership in our tough game against Gloucester,†said the coach.
The Lady Patriots will be back in action today (Wednesday) at Salem and will host Winthrop Tuesday. They will travel to Essex Tech next Wednesday.
RHS girls tennis
team drops openers
The Revere High girls tennis team came out on the short end of a 5-0 decision to Medford Monday in an encounter that featured fiercely-contested battles in the singles matches.
Lady Patriot sophomore Jocelyn Contreras fell in three sets, one of which included a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 2-6. Senior Leila Darouey, playing at second singles, lost 3-6 and 5-7. Junior Lyba Khan at third singles came up short in another three-set duel, 6-4, 3-6, 2-6.
In the doubles matches, the first doubles duo of sophomores Yolani Granados and Alondra Esparza lost 0-6, 1-6 and the second doubles team of sophomores of Lariza Haro and Maria Hernandez likewise lost in straight sets, 0-6, 0-6.
“All the singles players had very close matches,†said RHS head coach Carla Maniscalco. “Our doubles teams are gaining more experience.â€
In their season-opening match last week, the Lady Patriots lost to Salem, 3-0, in a contest that featured snowy conditions and that was halted mid-way through the match because the courts were too wet for the doubles contests.
The RHS girls who played in the singles positions in the Salem match were senior Andrea Rueda at first singles, Contreras at second singles, and Darouey at third singles.
