RHS Hockey Opens Tonight

The Revere High hockey team will get its 2012-13 season underway this evening, Wednesday, Dec. 12, when the Patriots host Somerville, former long time rival from the Greater Boston League, at Cronin Rink. Face off time is 6:30.

First year coach Joe Ciccarello’s Patriots engaged in a series of scrimmages over the past week in preparation for the season opener. “The team is working extremely hard and showing a great work ethic,” said Ciccarello. “I have no complaints withe their attitude and  intensity.

“But we need to translate that grittiness and determination from practice into our games,” continued Ciccarello. “We have a lot of younger players playing in roles where they don’;t have a lot of experience, so hopefully they will adjust to their new positions and at a varsity level as soon as possible.’

After tonight’s encounter, the Patriots will host Marblehead next Wednesday at Cronin at 6:30.

Boys hoop team  opens Friday at English

The Revere High boys basketball team will open its 2012-13 season Friday at Lynn English, the team that has become the perennial power on the North Shore and in the Northeastern Conference in recent years.

“It’s a tough opponent for the start of the season,” said RHS head coach Rick Hayes. “But we’ve scouted them and we’ll come ready to play.”

The Patriots have participated in a series of scrimmages in the past week and have fared well against most of their opponents, including one team, Winthrop, whom they will meet in the regular season.

“Things have been going well,” said Hayes. “We’ve shown that we can shot the ball, though we do not want to rely on the three pointer.” Hayes noted that Dom Boyce hit a pair of treys and teammates Chris Hinojosa, Steve Selesnick, and Ravi Ryland also drained a three pointer. Hayes also lauded the efforts of Jason Seigal in the backcourt (“Jason sees the entire court very well”) and forwards Mike Ciambelli and Doug Zingali.

After Friday’s night’s opener, the Pats will host Lynn Classical Tuesday, travel to Chelsea for a non-league encounter next Wednesday, and host Salem next Friday.

They will play in the Pope John Christmas Tournament during the vacation break.
