The Revere High girls tennis team defeated Salem 3-2 last week for its first win of the season.
Both of the Lady Patriot doubles tandems cruised to easy victories. The first doubles duo of Mounia El-Arara and Karen Chan wept past their Salem foes 6-0, 6-0, as did the second doubles pairing of Samantha Harris and Mariah Rivera.
With Sara Grujic falling at first singles, 6-2, 6-1, and Christina DiFabio coming out on the short end of a three-set match at second singles, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, that left the final match of the day at third singles to decide the outcome.
Lady Patriot Nancy Nguyen won the first set, 7-5, but dropped the middle set, 3-6, setting the stage for a dramatic final set with all eyes on her. “Everything was on Nancy’s shoulders at that point,†said RHS head coach Carla Maniscalco, “and she came through for us,†as Nguyen triumphed by a 6-4 margin to give Revere the victory.
Two days later, the Lady Pats dropped a tight 3-2 decision to Winthrop. Once again both of the doubles duos won their matches, with El-Arar and Chan winning by a 6-4, 6-3 decision and Mei Ling Theng and Rivera triumphing in a hard fought battle, 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 7-5.
However, Winthrop claimed all three of the singles matches to take the victory.
This past Monday saw the Lady Patriots fall 4-1 to Beverly. The first doubles team of El-Arar and Chan once again were victorious, defeating their Beverly counterparts, 6-4, 6-3.
Maniscalco and her team have a busy week ahead. They play at Swampscott today (Wednesday), at Lynn English tomorrow, at Saugus Monday, and at Lynn Classical next Wednesday.
