Baseball Team Opens Season Today at Salem

The Revere High boys of spring open their 2011 season today (Wednesday) at Northeastern Conference rival Salem. Coach Joe Ranno and his crew will get right into the heart of the schedule against their NEC opponents, hosting Lynn Classical this Friday and Beverly Monday morning on the holiday. The Pats will travel to Lynn English next Wednesday morning and then to non-league foe Northeast Regional Vocational School next Friday morning.

“We should be able to hit the ball, but pitching will be the key for us,” said Ranno, who is being assisted this season by Mike Kearney and Michael Hinojosa.

Ranno will draw from a group of seven pitchers, including returnees John DiVenuti, Dale Paradise, southpaw Jimmy Ortiz, and Mike Ferrante. Also figuring to see action on the mound will be transfer students Chris Palladino and R.J. Tiorano, as well as freshman Tom Portrait.

Many of the pitchers also will see duty in the infield, most notably Paradise, a returning NEC all star, at shortstop, and Portrait and Tiorano at second base/shortstop.

Senior Paul Norton will handle the all important catching chores behind the plate, with Steve Ciambelli serving as backup. Ciambelli also will play at the corners, as will Ferrante.

Returning letterman Frank Colleran, Drew Lauria, and Vin Lauria will patrol the outfield, as will sophomore Mark Mahoney and Ortiz. Rounding out the Patriot roster are Adam Ismael (1B), Chris Whalen (1B), and John Papsodero (C/IF).
