Ciccarello is at the center of the diamond

“Rain, rain, go away,” no doubt is the mantra for the Revere High softball team, under the direction of new head coach Joe Ciccarello, as they prepare to open the 2010 season this Tuesday, April 6, at former Greater Boston League rival Medford.

A “work in progress” might best describe the status of the Lady Patriots, who have been at the mercy of Mother Nature thus far this rainy spring season.

“We haven’t had much time to work outside because of the weather,” said Ciccarello, “so I’m still getting to know the girls and vice versa. Hopefully, if we can get in some scrimmages before the season opener, we’ll be able to start to figure things out.”

One major plus for Ciccarello is that he has a three talented Lady Patriots returning to the mound in Kat Prince, Briana Lauletta, and Sara Selevitch. Another known quantity for the Lady Pats is their trio of captains, Selevitch, Jess Simpson, and Paige Licata.

Licata however, still is sidelined by the ligament tear in her knee that kept her out of action for the entire basketball season.

“Paige is working hard and coming around,” said Ciccarello of Licata, who was one of the best hitters on the team last year as well as a defensive stalwart at second base, “so we’re hopeful she’ll be able to play later in the season.”

Ciccarello also acknowledged the legacy of long time Lady Patriot head coach Joe Nichinello, whom Ciccarello has succeeded.

“Joe gave his heart and soul to this program and I’m honored to follow in his footsteps,” said the new coach.

After the Lady Patriots’ season opener Tuesday, they will travel to Everett on Thursday for an encounter with another former GBL rival.
