Exit Wonderland

The race is now on to get some kind of slot machine legislation passed for Wonderland and the state’s two other dog racing tracks following the vote Tuesday to ban dog racing in  Massachusetts.

In an interview given to the Journal by Lt. Governor Tim Murray last week, he said that gambling legislation of one kind or another about introducing casino gambling in Massachusetts would likely be coming up in January.

January will not be soon enough for everyone working at Wonderland and for the owners, who need a reason to exist or the track as we know it today is destined not to survive.

Here, there is a special urgency as many of Wonderland’s remaining employees could not find jobs or benefits they receive elsewhere that are as good as the tracks. Then there is the entire dog racing family of breeders and trainers, owners and hangerson who are facing extinction.
