RHS girls volleyball qualifies for tourney; now stands at 11-3
The Revere High girls volleyball team split its four matches this past week, with the first victory of the week qualifying the Lady Patriots’ for the Division 2 post-season state tournament.
Last Monday, the Lady Patriots took on Lynn Classical, which is in first place in the Greater Boston League with an 8-0 record and ranked 16th in Division 3. Revere pushed the Lady Rams to five sets before falling by a score of 3-2.
“This was a hard-fought, 3-2 loss to Lynn Classical,” said RHS head coach Emilie Clemons. “Classical is a really good team, but we competed really well against them. As a coach, I’m really proud of how well they played and we can only use this experience to keep improving as the season goes on.”
Dayana Ortega, Haley Peralta, and Samarah Meristal led the Lady Patriot attack with seven kills apiece and Basma Sahibi added six kills. Susan Lemus Chavez had 17 assists.
Two days later the Lady Patriots bounced back for a 3-0 win over Lynn English for their 10th victory of the season that punched their ticket for a Journey to the Tourney.
Basma Sahibi led the way with nine kills, Isa Arroyave added eight kills, and Samarah Meristal delivered seven kills.
The girls then traveled to Essex Tech, which is ranked 33rd in D-3, and dropped a 3-1 decision. Samarah Meristal accounted for six kills and Basma Sahibi had five kills.
This past Monday the Lady Patriots edged Medford, 3-2. Samarah Meristal turned in a superb performance with 13 kills and five aces. Haley Peralta also made a major contribution with 11 kills and four aces. Setting the assists for their teammates were Anna Doucette with 15 assists and Susan Lemus Chavez with 18 assists.
“These girls have continued to compete and focus on their goals, even with a couple of players injured on the team,” said Clemons. “In life you have to learn how to react to adversity: you will either crumble under the pressure or you will overcome it.”
Clemons and her crew are scheduled to host Chelsea today (Wednesday), Beverly on Friday, and Somerville next Wednesday.
RHS boys soccer splits contests
It was a 50/50 week for the Revere High boys soccer team, who split their two contests with Greater Boston League rivals Somerville and Lynn Classical on the turf field behind the high school.
Last Tuesday, the Patriots suffered their first loss of the season by a score of 3-1 to the Somerville Highlanders.
“This was a bad loss because of our expectations for ourselves,” said RHS head coach Gerardo Rodriguez. “We had too many individual errors to have earned a draw or a win.”
However, the Patriots bounced back two days later with a 4-0 victory over Lynn Classical.
“A couple of people who caught a lot of my frustration on Wednesday at the film review of the Somerville game responded and had some very big performances,” said Rodriguez.
Rodriguez and his crew still are comfortably in first place in the GBL with a 7-1-0 record (7-1-1 overall), three points ahead of second-place Chelsea, which has a 5-2-1 GBL mark. The Patriots were scheduled to meet Lynn English yesterday (Tuesday) and will play at Everett Stadium tomorrow (Thursday) night at 6:30.
The Patriots, who are ranked 31st in the Division 2 power ratings, then will have a big game at Chelsea (which is ranked 28th in D-2) next Tuesday afternoon.

The Revere High boys cross country team recorded its first win of the season with a 15-50 victory over Lynn English at Lynn Woods last Wednesday.
Diogo Yogi completed the 2.8 mile course in a time of 19:15 to lead the Patriots. Diogo was followed by teammates Kosta Stamatopoulos in 20:11, Cristian Requeno in 20:15, Javier Rosa: in 28:11, Noah Shanley in 28:12, Andre Nguyen in 28:14, and Josh Rugutt in 28:15.

Girls fall short vs. Lynn English
The Revere High girls cross country team came up short by a score of 23-32 in its meet with Lynn English last Wednesday at Lynn Woods.
“Unfortunately, we did not come away with a win,” said RHS head coach Katie Sinnott. “It just was not our day. We had illnesses, a fall, and a couple of girls got lost, placing them behind where they would have been – so all in all, it was not what we had hoped for (much like the Red Sox!).
“We will face them again at the league meet when we will face all the teams in the GBL, and we hope to beat them there,” Sinnott continued. “One bright spot was senior Salma El Andalosy, who made big improvements from last week.
“We will finally have a home meet when we face Everett at Belle Isle,” Sinnott added. “Our course is fast and flat, which will be a welcome change from the slower, hilly courses of both Lynn Classical and Lynn English. The team is excited to race on our course and looking forward to putting our speed to the test.”
Individual Results:
Olivia Rupp – 2nd overall – 21:39
Rania Hamdani – 5th overall – 27:43
Emma DeCrosta – 6th overall – 28:01
Salma El Andalosy – 9th overall – 33:47
Valeria Acevedo Estrada – 11th overall – 43:07
Adis Cordero Canela – 12th overall – 43:08
After the meet today (Wednesday) with Everett, Sinnott and her crew will host Malden next Wednesday.
Tough stretch for RHS girls soccer
Despite a difficult first half of the season, the Revere High girls soccer team will be looking to improve over the second half of their schedule.
A 3-2 loss to Everett typified the Lady Patriots’ season thus far.
“We played a very tough, solid game and fell short, 3-2, due to a penalty kick (PK),” said RHS head coach Ariana Rivera. “Our goalkeeper, Ajsi Balla, played a solid game in the net with eight saves.”
The Revere goals were scored by senior captain Nataly Esquivel, assisted by junior Sara Granados, and junior Emily Torres off a direct kick.
In a 1-1 tie with Chelsea, the Lady Patriots once again came up just short of a victory. “This was a well-played game for both teams,” said Rivera. “Unfortunately, both teams suffered a few injuries, but managed to finish the game strong. Freshman goalkeeper Valeria Atehortua made her debut in net, moving Ajsi Balla to a midfield position, where she is able to create more opportunities for us.
“After the Chelsea game, we suffered a handful of injuries that sort of set us back a bit,” said Rivera. “We are in a building period and moving people into new roles.”
In a 4-0 loss to Medford, Atehortua made 13 saves. “We struggled to find consistency on the defensive end, and to bridge the gap between midfielders and strikers,” noted Rivera.
Revere had some success on offense in a 4-2 loss to Malden. The goals were scored by Giselle Alarcon (assisted by Angie Cruz Caneza) and Sharon Oliva. Atehortua. made 12 saves.
Last week, the Lady Patriots dropped decisions to Somerville (7-3) and Lynn Classica (7-1). Emily Torres netted the RHS goal vs. Classical on a direct kick.
Rivera and her crew were scheduled to meet Lynn English yesterday (Tuesday) and will host Everett tomorrow (Thursday). They will make the long trek to non-league opponent Salem next Monday and will entertain Chelsea next Tuesday afternoon.
Looking ahead, the Lady Patriots will conduct their Senior Night festivities vs. Everett under the lights at Harry Della Russo Stadium at 7 p.m.
