New season, new coach for Revere High girls soccer

The Revere High 2024 fall athletics season is set to get underway this week, with the Lady Patriot soccer team featuring a new head coach.

Ariana Rivera, who also coaches the RHS girls basketball program, will be stepping into the role of head coach, succeeding Megan O’Doinnell, who had helmed the girls’ soccer program for many years.

“The pre-season has been going well,” said Rivera. “We played in the Medford Jamboree and there was some good and bad, but so much projection for growth. The team has been working hard in practices to perfect the formation and learn new positions that they might not have been comfortable with playing in the past. Once we can solidify our defense, we will be in a solid spot come our first game against Somerville.”

The 2024 Lady Patriots will be led by a quartet of captains: Nisrin Sekkat, Erika Mejia, Fatima Esquivel, and Sandra Torres.

The other members of the varsity team are: Salma Zahouri, Amina Baroudi, Kathy Granados, Johanna Rivas, Kaylin Oliva Folgar, Grace Ramirez, Mia Ventura, Ikram Bichou, Emily Torres, Ajsi Balla, Amilee Hernandez, Kesley Morales, and Salome Alvarez, plus swing players Sarah Aguilar, Jayleeyah Figueroa, Lesly Mendoza, Adriana Cataldo, and Sara Granados.

The girls will kick off the season tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon with a contest against Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Somerville on the field at RHS. Rivera and her crew will play a 16-game schedule consisting of two contests with each of the seven GBL schools ((Malden, Medford, Somerville, Chelsea, Revere, Lynn Classical, and Lynn English) and two games vs. non-league opponents Milton and Haverhill at the end of the season.

After tomorrow’s match with Somerville, the Lady Patriots will play at Lynn Classical next Wednesday and at Lynn English next Thursday.

The Revere High boys soccer team likewise will kick off its 2024 campaign tomorrow (Thursday) with a match at GBL rival Somerville. Veteran head coach Manny Lopes and his crew will host GBL foes Lynn Classical next Tuesday and Lynn English next Thursday.

Similar to the girls, the boys will have a 16-game schedule, with 14 contests against their seven GBL rivals and two with non-league opponents St. Mary’s of Lynn and Central Catholic in the final week of the season.

The RHS field hockey team, which originally had been scheduled to open its season this Friday, will get its season underway this Saturday (September 7) when they will make the long bus ride to non-league opponent Lowell.

“Our game on Friday is in the process of being rescheduled, so our away game in Lowell on Saturday will now be our first game,” said RHS head coach Alexandra Butler. “We’re excited to play Lowell as they are a talented and strong team.”

Butler’s squad will be led by a trio of captains, seniors Jordan Martelli and Ana Kalliavas (who are the only two seniors on the team) and junior Gemma Stamatopoulos. The other members of the 2024 varsity are: freshman Katherine Aborn, eighth-grader Naomie Abreha, sophomore Victoria Ackles, junior Sonia Haily, freshman Zizi Kalliavas, sophomore Kyla Lanes,  junior Isabella Mendieta, freshman Nicole Miranda,  junior Ava Morris, eighth-grader Lena Morris, junior Danni Hope Randall, freshman Bethany Tedele, and sophomore Genevieve Zierten.

Revere is only one of three GBL schools that compete in field hockey (Malden and Everett are the other two), which means that Butler and her crew will be facing an array of non-league opponents for the majority of their schedule. They will host Northeast Regional next Wednesday afternoon and Arlington Catholic next Thursday afternoon on the turf at Harry Della Russo Stadium.
