Revere Football Team Defeats Medford, 42–15; Funez Gonzalez Scores 3 TDs in GBL Opener

The Revere High School football team bolted into the win column with a 42-15 triumph over Medford in its Greater Boston League opener last Thursday at Harry Della Russo Stadium.

Maykin Funez Gonzalez rushed for three touchdowns to power the Patriots’ offense. He had 12 carries for 85 yards.

Revere quarterback Carlos Rizo threw a 25-yard touchdown to Domenic Boudreau. Sophomore Giovanni Woodard had a 60-yard run and scored a touchdown late in the game. Sophomore running back Danny Hou also excelled in the backfield. Senior captain and running back Davi Barreto returned to the lineup and had 80 yards on six carries. However, Barreto re-injured his hamstring and will be sidelined for this week’s game against Lynn English.

Felipe Maia, who is Revere’s placekicker, was a perfect 6-of-6 on extra points. Maia, who doubles as the punter, also pinned Medford deep in its own territory on a few occasions.

Jason Shosho submitted another strong performance on defense with a team-leading 10 tackles.

“It was a good game on both sides of the ball,” said Revere head coach Lou Cicatelli. “Maykin ran the ball very well. And Felipe had a superb game kicking the football.”

Revere (1-2) will try to get to the .500 mark in a home game against Lynn English (0-3) Friday at 6 p.m. at Della Russo Stadium.

“It’s a big chance for us to get to 2-2 and keep getting more points for the playoffs. We’re sitting in the 15th spot in the division right now. That’s how the points system works. You get points for playing those teams (Peabody and Plymouth South).”
