RHS Fall Sports Get Underway This Week

After a pre-season of dry and near-perfect weather, Mother Nature pulled a cruel trick on area high school athletes with a steady menu of rain for the first week of the 2022 fall athletic season.

But despite the inclement weather,  Revere High athletes are set to get their seasons underway this week.

The Patriots once again will be competing in the eight-school Greater Boston League with fellow members Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Somerville, Lynn Classical, and Lynn English.

Both the boys and girls soccer teams were scheduled to kick off the 2022 season yesterday (Tuesday), with coach Manny Lopes and his boys squad hosting Medford and coach Megan O’Connell and the girls making the short trek to Medford.

The boys will entertain Somerville tomorrow (Thursday), with the girls traveling to Somerville. The boys then will hit the road to Lynn Classical next Tuesday, while the girls will entertain Classical for their first home match.

Coach Lianne Mimmo and the girls volleyball squad will be seeking to duplicate their successful 2021 season in which the Lady Patriots qualified for the post-season state tournament.

The Lady Patriots have a busy opening week on tap with five matches in nine days: Mimmo and her crew were scheduled to take on Archbishop Williams yesterday (Tuesday); travel to Somerville today (Wednesday); and then host Winthrop on Friday, Lynn Classical on Monday, and Lynn English next Wednesday.

Field hockey coach Briana Scata and her crew were scheduled to open their season at Malden yesterday (Tuesday) and will entertain Northeast Regional tomorrow (Thursday) and Greater Lawrence next Tuesday.

The RHS girls and boys cross country teams, under the direction of veteran coaches Katie Sinnott and Mike Flynn respectively, are scheduled to make the short trek to the Admiral’s Hill course in Chelsea today (Wednesday) to take on the Red Devils to get their 2022 season underway. They will travel to Medford next Wednesday.

Coach Brandon Pezzuto and the RHS golf team will open their season against non-league foe Winthrop next Tuesday (September 13) at Kelly Green.
