RHS Basketball Teams Ready for Season-Openers

The Revere High girls and boys basketball teams were scheduled to open their 2022 seasons last night (Tuesday) against Greater Boston League rival Everett.

Both squads then will take on another GBL foe, Somerville, tomorrow (Thursday). The girls will host the Lady Highlanders at the Merullo Fieldhouse at 6:00, while the boys will make the trek to Somerville.

Both teams have been working hard in anticipation of the coming season.

On the girls’ side, last week the Lady Patriots engaged in pre-season scrimmages with Milton and Chelsea.

“I find a lot of value in preseason scrimmages, as it allows us to find out a lot about our team,” said new RHS girls head coach Chris Porrazzo. “Some players really carved out a role for themselves by the way they played.

“Although it was apparent that there were some areas that we need to strengthen, there were certainly a lot of bright spots,” continued Porrazzo,  “We want to wish the best of luck to coach West and Milton this season, as well as coach Restiano and Chelsea, whom we will see again later in January.

“Our team has been working extremely hard to start the season and they are ready to go,” added Porrazzo.

The 2022 Patriots will be led by a trio of captains, senior Carolina Carvalho-Bettero, senior Skyla DeSimone, and sophomore Haley Belloise.

Porrazzo and his squad will meet each of their seven GBL rivals (Chelsea, Everett, Medford, Malden, Somerville, Lynn Classical, and Lynn English) twice and will take on non-league foes Peabody, Waltham, Winthrop (twice), and two opponents in the North Reading holiday tournament to complete their 20-game schedule.

Coach David Leary and his squad will be led by a trip of senior captains, Jack D’Ambrosio, James Clauto, and Ihssan Mourouane.

The Patriots will take on all of their seven GBL rivals (Chelsea, Everett, Medford, Malden, Somerville, Lynn Classical, and Lynn English) twice each and will play four games in two holiday tourneys. They also will meet non-league foes East Boston and Hamilton-Wenham to round out their 20-game schedule.

The contest with Hamilton-Wenham on January 16 at 8:30 p.m. will be a sure highlight of the season for the Pats because the  encounter will take place at the TD Garden.

After Thursday’s encounter with Somerville, both the girls and boys will take on GBL rival Lynn Classical next Tuesday. The boys will entertain Classical at the RHS fieldhouse with a 7:00 tip-off, while the girls will journey to the Lady Rams’ home court.
