RHS volleyball wins three, improves to 7-6

The Revere High volleyball team moved above the .500 mark this week, winning all three of its contests.

Last Monday the Patriots took on Greater Boston League rival Everett and cruised to a 3-0 victory.

Two days later Revere took on GBL foe Somerville for the second time this season. Somerville had defeated the Patriots with a 3-0 shutout in their initial meeting, but coach Lianne Mimmo’s crew turned the tables in the rematch and earned a 3-0 triumph.

“We had a change in our line-up and some great team play,” said Mimmo. “It wasn’t an easy contest. During the second set, we were down by 10 points, but rallied back to win the set by three points and then finished with a strong final set.”

Last Friday the Patriots journeyed to non-league rival East Boston to take on an undefeated (6-0) Eastie squad. Revere jumped out to a quick start, capturing the first two sets, but the Jets zoomed into gear to take the next two sets to bring the match back to level.

However, the Patriots regained their momentum in the final set to claim the victory.

“We were missing both of our captains and right side,” noted Mimmo. “We started off very strong, winning the first two sets, but couldn’t finish them off in the third or fourth sets. We really struggled to make good decisions with the ball, but we were able to win the final set.”

Mimmo and her crew have a busy week on tap. They took on undefeated Lynn Classical this past Monday and will trek to Lynn English today (Wednesday). They will host Medford on Friday and entertain Chelsea next Monday before traveling to Malden next Wednesday.

Girls cross country runs past Everett

The Revere High girls cross country team was victorious in its meet last Thursday at Greater Boston League rival Everett on the Lady Crimson Tide’s new home course.

Lady Patriot Rocio Gonzalez Castillo won the race in a time of 22:26.  Teammate Carly Bennett was the next runner across the line in a clocking of  24:55, followed by fellow Lady Patriots Yasmin Riazi in third in 26:22, Christy Ly in fifth in 29:10, Samantha Solis in sixth in 32:34, Maajda Louaddi in seventh in 32:34, and Jessica Medina in ninth in 41:44.

“It was a perfect day for a race with mild temperatures and no wind,” said RHS head coach Katie Sinnott. “The Everett course is a runner’s dream and the girls’ race times are evident of that.

“Nearly everyone on the team ran a personal best pace and looked strong running throughout the whole race, allowing the team to take four of the top five spots,” Sinnott continued. “Rocio Gonzalez led the race from the gun to the tape, making a win look effortless.  The team supported each other and encouraged all the runners throughout, making for a really good day all around.  Running personal bests were Rocio Gonzalez, Yasmin Riazi, Christy Ly, Samantha Solis, and Jessica Medina.”

This past Monday the Lady Patriots came up short in their meet with Medford by a score of  22-30.

Rocio Gonzalez Castillo once again was the top Lady Patriot, coming across the line in third place in a time of 21:53. Carly Bennett was the next Revere runner in fifth place with a clocking of 23:10, followed by teammates Yasmin Riazi in sixth in 25:31, Christy Ly in seventh in 26:52,  Samantha Solis in 10th in 27:53, and Maajda Louaddi in 11th in 29:00.

“It was cold, rainy, and raw, but many girls ran their best home race times and several ran personal-best paces,” said Sinnott.

â€œWhile the team did not come away with a win, there were some bright points,” Sinnott added. “Rocio Gonzalez, Yasmin Riazi, Christy Ly, and Samantha Solis ran personal-best home course race times.

“Yasmin and Christy shaved off nearly four minutes from their previous home race times,” Sinnott continued. “The whole team has been working consistently and in that consistency comes improvement.  Running personal-best paces were Christy Ly and Samatha Solis.  Samantha was also the most improved racer from our Everett meet.”

Sinnott and her squad will trek to Malden tomorrow (Thursday) and will host Chelsea next Wednesday.

Boys cross country defeats Everett, 24-32

The Revere High boys cross country team made the short journey to Everett a profitable endeavor with a 24-32 victory over Everett on the Crimson Tide’s new home course.

The race was fiercely-contested, with the top seven runners separated by just 17 seconds.

Leading the way for the Patriots was senior captain Victor Pelatere, the defending Greater Boston League champion, who traversed the 3-mile route in a time of 20:09. Victor was followed by teammates Trey Delaney, who came in fourth in a clocking of 20:17, Mohmed Ouakani in fifth in 20:18, and Miguel Leonarte in sixth in 20:20.

After an Everett runner took seventh spot in 20:26,  Brayden Shanley clinched the win for the Patriots with an eighth-place finish in 22:28.

Santiago Gil ran in his first meet and did well with a 10th place finish in 29:02.

“It was a great race,” said RHS head coach Mike Flynn, whose squad was scheduled to meet Medford this past Monday and will trek to Malden tomorrow (Thursday). They will host Chelsea next Wednesday.

The Revere/Malden High golf team took on Greater Boston League rivals Medford and Everett in a tri-match last Wednesday and earned a split, coming up short against Medford (46.5-25.5) and topping Everett (48-24).

Level week for RHS girls soccer

It was a level week for the Revere High girls soccer team, who went 1-1-1 with a win, a tie, and a loss in its three contests last week.

Last Monday coach Megan O’Donnell’s crew took on non-league rival Melrose and came up short by a score of 3-0.

“It was an evenly-matched game,” said O’Donnell. “We had great goalkeeping from freshman Nisrin Sekkat, who stopped 20 shots, and we had great ball control from Ericka Mejia and Catalina Chizavo in the midfield. Senior captain Carolina Bettero stepped up and played well in the middle.

“We had our chances but we couldn’t find the net,” O’Donnell added.

On Tuesday the Lady Patriots battled Medford and dueled the Lady Mustangs to a nil-nil deadlock.

“We had tremendous defense from Samarah Paiva, Sandra Torres, Gisselle Salvador, and Ari Pina,” said O’Donnell. “Once again, freshman goalkeeper Nisrin Sekkat kept us in the game with some great saves, Midfielder and junior captain Nahomy Galvez played her best game of the season, controlling the midfield and helping on defense.”

Revere then took on Chelsea and came away with a  6-0 victory. Senior captain Carolina Bettero paced the Revere offense with a four-goal performance. Freshman Ericka Mejia and Samarah Paiva also reached the back of the Chelsea net.

“We had great play and leadership from senior captain Angela Huynh, Emily Gomez, and Sophia Padron and we had great defense from Pamela Marquez, Amina Baroudi, Amina Chitaoui, and Fatima Oliva,” said O’Donnell. “We also had awesome ball movement from Kathy Granados, Cynthia Rodriguez, Kyra Delaney, and Kyara Rodriguez.

“Giselle Portillo and Kim Doblado stepped up and contributed some amazing ball movement and defense,” O’Donnell added.

O’Donnell and her crew were scheduled to take on Somerville yesterday (Tuesday) and will host Lynn Classical tomorrow (Thursday). They will entertain Lynn English next Tuesday.
