Shea Remains Hopeful That RHS Sports Can Resume in March

Revere High School Director of Athletics Frank Shea said the plan right now is for the Greater Boston League to have its three shortened sports seasons begin on March 1, 2020.

“We made that decision so that we can still accommodate all sports and have 10-12 games on the schedule,” said Shea.

The Revere boys and girls basketball and hockey teams would tentatively begin on March 1. The football, soccer, volleyball, soccer, golf, cross country and field hockey seasons would begin on April 12. The baseball, softball, tennis, lacrosse, track, and volleyball seasons would begin on May 17.

Shea said all decisions will depend on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. Positive cases of the coronavirus have been surging in Massachusetts and across the country.

“If, for example, Revere and Chelsea determine on March 1 that they can’t safely start their seasons, then those communities will either postpone further or not participate in that particular season,” said Shea. “We’re hoping that by March 1 the vaccines are out and this thing starts to come down the other side of the mountain a little bit and we’re in a much better position to start. But there’s no guarantee all the GBL schools will be able to start at that point.”

It appears that the Lynn English and Lynn Classical boys and girls basketball teams and boys hockey team (Lynn Jets) will compete against Revere and the GBL schools this spring. The Lynn schools will officially join the GBL in the fall. Lynn English is the two-time defending Division 1 state champion in boys basketball.
