Young RHS baseball team set to open under new coach

A new era for the Revere High baseball program gets underway Monday when the Patriots, under the direction of head coach Nick Faggas, travels to Weston for the 2012 season opener

Faggas comes to Revere after turning around the Marian High program from 1-19 to 15-5 within three seasons. Faggas also was coaching at MIT when he accepted the RHS position.

“It’s a been a good first two weeks,” said Faggas, who inherits a program that has been 4-76 over the past four years. “The boys have been working hard and getting into shape with a ot of running.”

Not only will the 2012 Pats have a new coach, but they also will feature what surely will be one of the youngest squads in the Northeastern Conference, relying heavily on underclassmen throughout their lineup.

Revere will be led by the captaincy duo of junior shortstop Mark Maloney and senior pitcher/outfielder Jim Ortiz. Senior Steve Ciambelli is back to handle the chores behind the plate, with fellow class of 2012 teammates, outfielder R.J. Tiorano, pitcher Kevin Calloch, and outfielder Chris Portrait, also expected to play leading roles.

However, Faggas will be counting upon freshman pitcher/outfielder/DH Noah Jaynes, freshman second baseman Jake DeAngelo, sophomore pitcher/outfielder/infielder Tom Portrait, junior third baseman Thomas McDonald, junior first baseman Jon Papasodora, and sophomore pitcher Jonathan Van Buskirk to bear a heavy load for the 2012 campaign.

“Our young pitchers have strong arms,” noted Faggas, “and all of our younger players are improving every day. We’re stressing defense and the fundamentals and feel that the hitting will come around as the season progresses.”

After the season opener Monday at non league foe Weston, Revere will jump into its Northeastern Conference schedule Wednesday at Lynn Classical.

RHS softball team ready for 2012 season

The Revere High softball team opened its 2012 campaign yesterday (Tuesday) as the Journal was going to press at non league rival Westford Academy. Coach Joe Ciccarello’s squad will travel to former GBL foe Waltham this coming Tuesday before delving into their Northeastern Conference schedule Wednesday at Beverly.

Team unity is the theme that Ciccarello has been stressing to his charges throughout the pre-season. “I’ve told the girls that our strength will come from working together,” said Ciccarello, whose 2012 edition will rely heavily upon a large number of underclassmen at key roles around the diamond.

The Lady Pats will have an experienced  pitching staff, led by returnees Sabrina Palermo (who was slated to get the starting nod vs. Westford), Briana Lauletta, and Noelle McDonald.

Lindsay Gurska will handle the duties behind the plate, with senior Michaela Maguire at first, freshman Christina Stella at second, sophomore Logan DiCarlo at short, and senior Courtney Gurska at third.

Alex Ambrosino, Jackie Noel, and Cassandra DiBella will patrol the outfield, with sophomore infielder Stephanie Gregorio, soph outfielder Stephanie Curtis, outfielder Eliza Anderson, and senior Lauren Hayes (who is sidelined with an injury) also figuring to see plenty of action for the Lady Pats.
