The Revere High hockey team improved to 2-1 on the season with an impressive 5-3 victory over Northeastern Conference rival Swampscott last Wednesday evening at Cronin Rink.
After spotting Swampscott a 1-0 lead through the first period on a goal that came at just 3:40 into the contest, the Patriots came out of the locker rom after the first intermission and quickly established the momentum in their favor.
RHS Captain Joe Corbett, assisted by Dale Paradise and R.J. Tiorano, knotted the game at 1-1 at 5:33. Although Swampscott retook the lead with a marker at 9:37, freshman defenseman Marco Mazzarelli scored his first career goal, assisted by Corbett and Paradise, to even matters once again, 2-2, with 28 seconds left in the period.
The Pats then assumed full control of the contest with three unanswered markers to open the third stanza. Corbett lit the red lamp for the second time, assisted by Tiorano and Paradise, at 1:10. Freshman Brandon Mastropietro then gave Revere an insurance tally at 11:05 with his first career goal, with the assist going to Pat Bartol.
Tiorano then gave Revere some double insurance when he stole the puck in the Swampscott end and cruised in alone for an unassisted goal at 14:20. Although Swampscott would get that one back less than 20 seconds later with the goalie pulled from the net, it was too little, too late.
“We started out a bit flat, but then we got going and played our game,†said RHS head coach Jim Palumbo, who noted the fine play of defensemen Chris Whalen, Mike Testa, and Drew Lauria in the victory . “Our defense has been solid for us,†added the coach.
The Pats are set to host Northeast Regional Vocational School this evening (Wednesday) at 6:30 at Cronin and then hit the road to Salem on New Year’s Day at 1:00 and to Marblehead next Wednesday at Salem State at 6:30.
